Author Takeover

What made you decide on writing about wolves in your romance novels and how do you come up with some of my most amazing and sexy characters?

I was writing about vampires and how sexy and hot they could be, but the market was suddenly flooded with them, so I tried to come up with something that wasn’t being done at the time. I was thinking of another misaligned character in horror stories, the werewolf. In the old werewolf tales, the werewolf was a man who became a beast, with no thought but to kill. Yet part of him was a man who regretted his inability to control the inner beast when it took over. Very much like the vampire.

So I took on a new cause. To show werewolves in a more romantic, loving light. Even with wolves, they’re treated in literature as beasts. And yet big cats are much more to attack people than wolves ever are. Not to say that wolves aren’t predators or that they can’t be dangerous, just as dogs can be. But I wanted to show werewolves as being one with their wolf halves. And that wolf part of them is strictly wolf, not a beast. They’re loyal, protective, and loving, family-oriented and the whole pack cares for and plays with the alpha pack’s pups. They mate for life, another great attribute to their cause.

And when the wolves are in human form, they’re human, except for their enhanced senses because of being part wolf. They are one and the same. They don’t take off their wolf coat and are strictly human. Or put on their wolf coat and are strictly wolf. And they love who they are. It’s not a curse, like in the original werewolf stories.

I also do a lot of research into wolf behavior to incorporate that into the characterizations.

But at the root of the characters themselves and how I really create them is by putting them in situations where they must show who they really are.

Finn Emerson, Navy SEAL team member on Hunter Greymere’s team, takes it upon himself to see to Hunter’s safety, and that means taking care of Meara, Hunter’s sister, as she lives with him. But when Finn arrives, he learns Hunter is off on a honeymoon with his new mate, and Meara is all alone. He can either send her to join Hunter in Hawaii, or protect her at the cabin resorts. But Meara has plans of her own, and Finn is ruining them!

In the original story featuring the Oregon coast wolf pack, Meara is searching for a mate. Fans of the series wrote to me saying they wanted to see who she’d end up with if she found the right wolf. Well, Finn is not on her list. He’s concerned for her safety when an assassin attacks the team members, and he’s put an end to her mate search.

The situation is serious, yet when I wrote it, I couldn’t help but have fun with the characters. The sexual tension sizzles between them from the beginning, yet they both deny, or at least try to deny their interest in each other. That’s because he’s not ready to settle down and she is.

But he’s as bad as her brother in thinking no other wolf is right for her! And when another wolf makes the moves on her, Finn sets him straight! Although she’s not happy about it. What if the other alpha male is the right one for her? Finn sure isn’t.

But what if he was? What if they settle down and have a couple of wolf pups in the future? I can see them sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of a fire while a storm is blowing outside the Oregon coast cabin, listening to papa Finn’s wild tales, and of momma Meara’s also, eyes wide, mouths agape and wanting to be just like their mom and dad, who wouldn’t want anything of the sort!!!

Are you ready for a romp on the wild side?

Thanks so much to FranJessca for having me here today! Thanks for the great review, and man, I was only in the Army, so didn't get to see the Navy SEALS running on any beach close by. Not fair! LOL

But when I was visiting my son at Pensacola, I got to see them in training. *sigh* That assignment, from that aspect, was a waste for him. :)

Mel, thanks so much!!! I hope you fall in love with the wolves!
