Guest Post and Giveaway with Jennifer James

Welcome to our stop on the Halloween Heat V Book Tour, where we get to know Author Jennifer James.

Thanks so much to the lovely ladies here at Book Lovin’ Mamas for hosting me today!
Since it’s getting close to Halloween I thought I’d tell you guys a ghost story. A real one. This all happened to me. And things like it continued to happen for years. I’m thirty-three years old now, and honestly I’m still afraid of the house I lived in from the time I was 12 until I was 18. Now, you might say that all the activity occurred because of some kind of connection to having two teenagers in the house. And maybe that’s true. But the activity continues to this day.
It was a dark and stormy night. (Couldn’t help it. I love Snoopy.)
Ahem. It was a dark and stormy night. (No, really, it was.) A summer thunderstorm rattled the windows and whipped the house with rain and wind. Lake Erie roared from the force of the waves pounding the beach at the end of the street.
The electricity flickered and died. My entire family was home. This was unusual, my father is a workaholic. We lit candles and the old oil lamps hanging on the living room walls and decided to play some games.
The temperature dropped and a cold breeze blew through the room. The windows on the north side of the house were cracked open so we shut them. But the cold temperature did not change.
Everything seemed quiet. For a bit.
Sam, our five year old rescue dog—a delightful mix of black Lab and Australian Shepard—stood and paced to the doorway that led to the hall. He snarled and growled, hackles raised and his fangs showing.
My brother and I glanced at each other. We were scared. We had reason to be. Sam never behaved that way, and we’d both seen the dark shadows in the house, heard the cupboards slam, and been locked out of (or in) our bedrooms.
Sam continued to pace and growl then began to bark with a violence I’d never seen. My father had been good naturedly trying to calm him from his arm chair. Sam’s outburst brought him to his feet and he attempted to grab the dog by the collar.
Sam snapped at him and almost bit his hand. When my father tried to pass Sam to get into the hallway, the dog snarled and herded him back into the living room. Small tree branches and rain lashed the siding. Lightning cracked and thunder shook the windows as it grew later and darker outside.
This went on for some time. Sam barking, snarling, and charging the doorway. My father watching mystified as the dog kept us trapped in the living room in sort of reverse of Cujo act. My mother shook her head at the spectacle with a vaguely satisfied look on her face. My father had never believed that the house was haunted.
When the storm wound down, Sam let us out of the room. My father still refused to believe that the house was haunted. My brother, mother, and I knew different.
Walking out of the living room raised every hair on my body because I passed through a dead space in the air that chilled me to the bone. The spot remained there for a long time.
A few weeks later, my father became a believer. But that’s a story for another day.
So, do you have a ghost story to share? Tell me about it!
