Blog Tour: "Compromising the Marquess" by Wendy Soliman (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Hi, thanks for having me here. You asked where I get the inspiration for my books. Wish I knew, then I’d bottle it and flog it on E-Bay for a fortune!

I’m not a plotter, but I do seem to possess the ability to create a full-length novel from a single idea. I’m here today to talk about Compromising the Marquess, the first in a four-book series of Regency romances published by Carina Press. I’ll explain the inspiration for this title later, but first let’s move forward to the third book in the series, which is a pretty good example of how I create something out of not very much.

Finessing the Contessa is Rob Forster’s story. He’s the middle of the three Forster brothers and readers will have met him briefly in the first two books in the series. He’s a chess master and so, not unnaturally, I wanted him to meet a woman who was his equal when it came to that game. I also figured an exotic foreigner might make it more interesting. But where ought she to come from?

That decision was made for me when I researched famous chess moves and happened upon The Sicilian Defence. Okay, so my heroine is going to be Sicilian. I then researched Sicily and found that small Island had been occupied more times than you can shake a stick at over the centuries, due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean. This was true during the Napoleonic wars, when the British took it over as a base for their fleet, even setting up a Parliament similar to the English one.

At the time of my story, the war is just over and the British have withdrawn, probably leaving mayhem in their wake if I know anything about my countrymen! Therefore, the British would have to step in and help Sicily to re-establish itself, wouldn’t it? Seems only fair. Trade agreements worth stabbing one another in the back to obtain would be up for grabs…hmm, I was off.

Back to Compromising the Marquess. Along with most of the nation, I was watching Prince William getting hitched at about the time I was thinking up this series. That got me dwelling upon Princess Dianna’s untimely demise, caused by the paparazzi. That, in turn, made me wonder about the origins of newspapers in England. Hence, my heroine, Leah, writes gossip for a scandal rag in order to support herself and her sister. Only she writes stuff that isn’t true about the Marquess of Denby, putting him in a compromising position, and throwing the two of them together as they try to put things right.

Deeply in love with his feisty scribe, Hal proposes marriage. Leah realizes that true love simply doesn’t recognise the class divide invented by society and joyously accepts him.
