Borrowing a Book is a Good Thing

I’m looking to buy a house within the next two months. Since August I have been perusing the house for sale online, hounding my mortgage broker, and driving through neighborhoods. In areas where the houses are snapped up quickly, I want to see what the houses are like, why people would buy them, and what makes them sell so quickly. Obviously, some people have done some things right to make those houses such a hot commodity.

But sometimes, the house on the outside is beautiful, but I get inside, and that’s when I start noticing the problem. There are water spots on the ceiling, cracks in the kitchen counters, and the back porch steps are crumbling. These aren’t faults that can be seen from just standing on the curb admiring the house from a distance, and if I didn’t look inside, I might end up buying a house that would cost more to repair than it did to buy it. But someone else will buy it because they enjoy tackling those problems and creating their own dream house.

I look at books the same way. I start out by being captured by the cover art and the book description. If I’m awed enough, I’ll pick up the book, usually through Kindle’s Lending Program because I want to see what the inside is like before I make a purchase. I want to see how other writers entice readers, how they tell their story, and how they keep people coming back for more.

Occasionally, the inside of the book is just like a faulty house, and I end up passing on the purchase. I got inside and took a look around, but the book wasn’t for me. But if the book is for me, I purchase it. No, I don’t need to because I’ve already borrowed the book to read it, but if it’s a book I really love, I may read it again. Or I may want to share it as a gift. I have several books on my shelves and in my Kindle that I will reread. I never would have bought them if I hadn’t borrowed them first.

My shelves are full with books I borrowed first. And if I borrow book one in the series, and it catches my attention, I’m going to buy the rest of the books. Borrowing is a good thing as long as you do it legally. I’d rather take a chance on borrowing a book than skipping it altogether and possibly missing out on the next best book of the decade. I could die today, and it wouldn’t matter. I’d still wake up tomorrow. Some people might consider that a good thing, and the time I took my first bullet, well, I can’t say I complained when I woke up, but that’s the middle of the story. 

At first I didn't want this "gift" which led me to a long search for my father. I thought he could help me. Turns out my father was in prison, and I just happened to get on the bad side of his warden—a huge, cyborg type of guy who could body double for Sylvester Stallone. He didn't want me to see my father, and he was a pretty big obstacle for me to overcome.

So here I am trying to convince this guy, Kier, to let me see my father when all hell breaks loose. Then I suddenly learn I really don't want to see dear old Dad after all. My life isn't in danger, but how I spend the rest of my immortal existence is. The only thing standing between me and certain torture is Kier. 

I don't doubt he'll protect me, but being so close to him makes me forget about things like safety. And the first time he kisses me turns into heat up the windows type of scene in the front seat of my car. 

My immortal existence is safe with Kier. My heart is on shaky ground. Only I could fall in love with a cyborg while my life is going to hell in a handbasket.
