Night’s Awakening ~

Meet the hero ~

Guy

Guy is wholly unprepared for his life to be shaken to its very core when he saves a woman who has trespassed onto their land and decided to go caving in their mountain. While everyone else is worried what she might have seen, Guy is more concerned with the way he can't stay away from Elena or her very tempting lips.
Never once has he turned his back on his fellow Dragon Kings, but for Elena he would do anything just to keep her near him. Even if it meant going against everything it was to be a King.

Night’s Awakening

Fueled by dragon magic, the dark immortal warriors were never meant to feel human desire, much less fall in love. But when Guy, a member of an ancient order of shape-shifting warriors, meets Elena Griffin—a mere mortal whose beauty and blind ambition shakes him to his core—all bets are off…
Having left America to explore the Scottish Highlands, Elena suddenly finds herself lost in a dark cave—alone, injured, and utterly hopeless…until Guy appears from out of nowhere. Is she dreaming her own rescue when she falls into his arms? A man—and a passion—this strong is too good to be true. It’s only a matter a time before she learns the truth about the flames in his heart. And the dragon in his soul…

Elena took the boulder Sloan had been sitting on when she first noticed the open space in the ground. With her gloved hands clutched in her lap, Elena watched Sloan begin to lower herself.
“Wow,” Sloan said a moment latter. “You should see this.”
“Another time perhaps.” Elena could see the light from Sloan’s hard hat reflecting off the cave walls.
“I’ll hold you to that.”
Elena peered over the side as Sloan went even deeper. A glance at her watch showed they’d been in the cave for almost three hours, which felt more like three lifetimes.
“We need to be heading back to the surface soon,” Elena called out.
Sloan said something, but Elena couldn’t make out what it was.
“Sloan! You’ve gone too far. I can’t hear you.”
The light from Sloan’s helmet shifted upward as she raised her head. “I’ll be up in just a moment. I’m just looking around.”
“Come up higher.”
But Sloan only went lower.
Elena’s stomach clenched in dread. She was cold and getting colder, and they had been in the cave far longer than Sloan had promised.
And then Elena heard something give a loud pop. Her head jerked to where Sloan had hammered in the bolt and discovered it coming loose.
“Sloan! The bolt! It’s coming loose. Get hold of something!”
Elena prayed Sloan heard her as she jumped up and looked through her pack for the small hammer. She slammed it against the bolt, banging it back into the rock, but that would only buy Sloan a little more time.
She rushed back to the gap and leaned over to find Sloan looking up at her.
“I hammered it back in, but it won’t stay long.”
“Put in another bolt!” Sloan shouted.
Elena looked around. “Where?”
“Just find a place, and then tie your rope and throw it down to me.”
“Shit,” Elena muttered as she rushed around doing exactly what she prayed she wouldn’t have to do. “If only Sloan hadn’t gone down that damned hole.”
But she had, and now Elena had to get her out.
Elena put in the new bolt and reached for the rope. Her fingers weren’t doing as she wanted and her hands were shaking, but she was determined to tie the Italian hitch.
“Almost done!”
“I’m coming up!” Sloan shouted.
She looked to Sloan’s bolt to see it barely hanging in place. “No! Stop, Sloan!”
Before the words were out of her mouth, the bolt jerked from the rock and down into the darkness. Elena’s stomach fell to her feet like lead as she could only stare in bewilderment at the missing bolt.
There was a second of silence and then she heard Sloan scream before that, too, faded to nothing.
“No. No, no, no, no, no,” Elena said as she ran to the hole. “Sloan? Can you hear me? Sloan!”
Only silence met her calls.

Dreagan Distillery
Hal shut and locked the doors to the distillery for the day before he turned and looked out over the land. Snow blanketed everything and the light the crescent moon cast upon the ground made it look almost as if it were glowing.
The need to lose himself in the land in the forest sometimes was overwhelming, as it was this night. Other times he could ignore the call, but not tonight.
Hal didn’t bother to tell the others where he was going. He simply walked down the steps and into the night. The weather didn’t faze him.
His boots crunched in the thick snow, but he never noticed. His gaze was trained on the forest ahead. Every one of them answered to something, and for Hal it was the forest.
Always had been.
Always would be.
Once he was in the trees, he took a deep breath and lifted his face to the sky. Snow landed on his lashes and rain dripping from the limbs above pelted his face.
It was glorious.
Hal smiled and spread his arms wide. He touched his chest, through his jacket and sweater, to the tattoo beneath.
A person could get lost in the glens of the Highlands, and there were thousands of glens. Which made it a perfect place for Hal and the others like him to stay hidden.
It had been a long time since he’d allowed his other self to show, his dragon self. And for some reason, this night he desperately yearned to spread his wings and fly.
To feel the wind around him as he soared through the sky.
He still remembered flying low over the trees, the leaves brushing against his underside as the sun beat on him. He hadn’t needed to hide then. For once upon a time, he had been able to call to his brethren and listened to their roars fill the forest.
So very long ago he had lived a completely different life. Back before the humans betrayed them, before a war that changed everything.
A sound off to Hal’s right had him turning his head in that direction. He dropped his arms as his eyes fastened on a large, fast-moving animal loping through the trees.
Hal let his coat drop from his arms as he sprinted toward the animal. As he neared, he realized it was a dog—a very large dog. And the only person near Dreagan land who had such a dog was Dan Hunter.
With more frustration than Hal wanted to concede, he came to a halt. He had been able to take flight, but now he had to chase a dog. For several moments he watched the Great Dane running, his tongue lolling out the side of his mouth.
There had been a few times in Hal’s life where he’d felt that free, been that free. Those times were the barest of memories now.
When a person was as old as Hal, time blurred.
It was so easy to get lost in his memories, of what had once been, and what he had once been. But to allow himself to get absorbed in such recollections was not wise.
He pulled himself back from the brink and gave a loud, short whistle, which pulled Duke up short. The Great Dane turned his head to Hal and issued a deep, booming bark in greeting.
“Come here, lad,” Hal called.
Immediately, the dog ran to him, his tail wagging.
Hal rubbed the dog’s massive head. “It’s no’ like Dan to allow you to run like this. Nor is it like you to run off. What’s the problem, lad?”
Duke jerked against the hold Hal had on his collar. Hal narrowed his eyes. He’d learned very early in life to listen carefully when animals tried to speak. They might not be speaking your language, but they were talking. It was obvious Duke was trying to tell him something.
“Show me,” Hal said, and released the collar.
Duke took off at a run and Hal was quick to follow. Dreagan land extended far as the eye could see, and Dan’s cottage was the closest anyone lived to Dreagan.
It was because Dan rarely rented the property and didn’t cause any problems that Hal and the others hadn’t made a point of getting rid of him.
Hal easily kept pace with the Great Dane as they traversed over the land. When they crested the last hill that overlooked Dan’s cottage, Duke stopped and whined.
Dan’s Corsa could be seen by the light of the moon and despite the heavy snowfall. Thankfully, the rain had tapered off, but the snow made it difficult to see where Dan was.
Duke butted Hal’s hand with his head before he took off down the slope to the cottage. Hal had memorized the lay of the land centuries ago and knew where the boulders lay hidden in the snow.
He leapt down the slope and landed in thick snow. Duke caught up with him, and they both ran the rest of the way down the side of the mountain.
Hal rushed to the front door, but found it locked and all the lights out. When Hal turned to look for Duke, he found the Great Dane standing beside the car.
That’s when Hal noticed there was someone inside. In three strides he was beside the car. He tapped on the window, but the figure didn’t move.

My Review:
Can I just say...that my ALL-time favorite shifter has always been "Dragon-shifters".  OMG!!!
And...look at the cover...does it not make you want to go to the nearest online book store to buy it.
I actually pre-ordered this book and I found out that Heroes and Heartbreakers was going to give a first glimpse into the new series by Donna Grant, by posting "Dark Craving" on their site for 3 days.  I jumped at the chance to read it before it downloaded to my Kindle...which by the way I'm still keeping my pre-order because this book is a "re-read" for me in the future...because I loved it that much.
Donna Grant definitely prepares you for what is ahead in the Dark Kings books.  She sets her new trilogy off without confusion.
You're introduced to Cassie and how she is moving in with her brother, Dan in Scotland.  She's already having a horrible time adjusting there.  The airline lost her luggage and Dan is not there to pick her up.  Instead, she is given keys to a small car and is given directions to pick up Dan's dog before she heads to his house.  Where is her brother, Dan when she really needs him?  She is trying to spend time with him since she hasn't seen him for 9 years and he's the only family she has left.  She's had it rough...let's just say that.
Then the sexy Hal is introduced....and he did not realize that his life would change the moment he helps Cassie into Dan's house.  He can not help the fact that she is attractive and that he may be falling for her.  His kind is not supposed to fall in love with a human though...at least they haven't even fallen in love for years now.
Oh boy...I could go on and on what the story is about, but I do not want to give it away.  I'm not spoiling this book for anyone.  Let's just say if you haven't added this book to your to-read list or even pre-ordered it, you need to.  Donna brings you a magical world of dragon shifters and what happens when humans end up in the middle of the sexy dragon shifters and their magic.
I recommend this to anyone who has read Donna Grant's books before, who loves reading about dragon shifters (like I do...oh how I love dragon shifters...*sigh), and loves the paranormal romance genre.
I'm looking forward to the 2nd book to the trilogy now.  Is it the end of August yet?  Because I think this will be the trilogy that will make me lose my patience on waiting.  *sigh*  At least I can look at the covers of all the books and drool at my computer while I wait.  =)  I want to find out more about this world Donna has created and maybe even hook myself a sexy shifter.  (shhh...don't tell my hubby...)  =)
