Checkmate, My Lord Blog Tour (Guest Post/Giveaway)
Please give a warm welcome to Tracey Devyln to Book Lovin' Mamas today, where we let her takeover the blog. =)
A Day in the Life of
a Historical Romance Author
by Tracey Devlyn
Thanks so much for having me on Book Lovin’ Mamas! I’m
really looking forward to chatting with everyone.
For this historical romance author, one day can look very
different from the rest. But the one
thing that remains forever consistent is that I’m a busy girl. J
Most workdays begin around 5:00 am. After letting out my rescue
Doberman and feeding him, I grab some cereal—typically Golden Grahams or
Frosted Mini Wheats—before sitting down at my computer. I spend the next thirty
minutes answering email and scanning Twitter and Facebook. Then I take my
shower, drive forty minutes to my day job, where I spend the next nine hours
managing human resources for an environmental agency.
Those are the boring parts that rarely change Monday –
Friday. Weekday evenings and weekends is where the real action occurs. J
I write everyday. Generally, 3-4 hours during the evenings
and 16-20 hours on the weekend. I also squeeze in email, publicity, marketing,
social media, website management, in-person events, street team activities, and
a number of other things that don’t fit into any particular category.
Would it surprise you to learn that I love every minute of
it? I do. Writing, and the business of writing, is empowering, invigorating,
and to some extent liberating. There’s much about the business writers cannot
control, like covers, co-op placement, and acceptance of our next contract. But
there’s much we can control and that’s what I focus on. Thrive on, really.
This winter, I worked on a project with four other authors. We
established a street team, Dangerous Darlings, for fans of our
books and lovers of romance and suspense. We had such a great time coming up with
Release Missions, reward points, and unique prizes. I’m so excited to have
found a venue that will allow me to connect with readers in a very real and
personal way.
Tell me, how do you start out your day? What do you do to invigorate
your days off?
Thanks again to Book Lovin’ Mamas for having me today!
Hugs,
Tracey

After being exiled to his country estate, Sebastian is surprised when his beautiful, no-nonsense neighbor turns her seductive wiles on him. But years of intrigue have left him wondering why a respectable widow would risk scandal for a few nights in his bed. Sebastian takes his time unraveling the widow’s secrets, for he quickly realizes she might be the one sacrifice he is unwilling to make.
Living a quiet existence at Winter’s Hollow, Catherine Ashcroft spends her days doing little more than caring for her precocious six-year-old daughter and negotiating her neighbors’ various complaints against their absentee landowner, the enigmatic Earl of Somerton. But, all her boredom comes to a searing halt after learning her newly returned neighbor might have had something to do with her husband’s murder.
Catherine's orderly existence soon upends and she now finds herself in a desperate bid to save her daughter’s life. But she must betray the earl to do so, even though she no longer suspects him of foul play. Lauren succumbs to the the earl’s passionate kisses and recognizes the same loneliness she has felt for years lurking in his hard, crystalline eyes. As her lover’s enemies close in, will Catherine be able to save both her beloved daughter and the handsome spy who has stolen her heart?

I start out my day by getting to work 20 to 30 minutes early, it cuts down on the stress of worrying about getting there on time. Then I sit and read until it's time to start work. It's a nice relaxing way to get started. On my days off I sleep in unless I absolutely have something I need to do, and after doing any chores I have, I go for a nice walk around my neighborhood. It's great to get some fresh air, exercise and check out what's going on in the neighborhood.
Barbara, sounds fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
I try to start with a decent breakfast, especially with some protein, plus coffee of course (love my Keurig).
Coffee, of course! If I'm lucky, my hubby cooks breakfast before I have to go to work!

I try to start the day with some kind of breakfast before getting kidlet #3 out the door for school. Then I get to work a little early so I can center myself to start the day.
On my days off, I still try to eat something for breakfast before running a multitude of errands.
