Interview + Giveaway with Gina Lamm

1. Tell us 5 things about yourself that readers would not be able to find on the web. Well, I’m pretty much an open book, but I’ll try!

a. I’m petrified of the mask they used on the villain in the “Scream” movies.

b. I met my husband while doing community theatre.

c. I love to make collages to inspire myself.

d. My toy poodle’s full name is Sir Oliver Wendell Queen Rigbee Poo Lamm

e. I make a kickass chicken pot pie.

2. What does a typical writing day look for you?

A typical writing day (when I can get one around the full-time job) looks like this. I open the laptop with the best of intentions. I get lost in email for way too long. Then twitter sucks me in. Then I’ll check in with a writing buddy on chat. Then we’ll talk for much longer than we write. Then, six hours later, I’m in a panic because I’ve gotten nothing done, so I’ll open Write or Die and crank out my word count in less than two hours. If I could focus, I’d be dangerous.

3. Tell us a little bit about "The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl" and why readers should check it out?

If you’re a fan of geekyness, gaming, or pop culture, you should read it. If you’re fan of Regency romances, you should read it. If you can read, you should read it. ☺ This is a mashup of my favorite things. It’s a fun, lighthearted romance with a good dose of humanity and heart. Try it! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

4. What inspired you to write "The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl"?

I wanted to write about what I liked. So I made a mental list, and the top two things on the list that day were gaming and Regency romance. The instant it popped into my head I knew I had to write it.

5. What was the easiest and hardest scene to write in the book?

The easiest scene was the opening, by far. Not that much of the original opening scene made it into the book, but it was pretty gaming-heavy. We wanted to make it accessible to those who aren’t hardcore gamers, so we trimmed it back a LOT. But the goblin battle was EPIC, I assure you. ☺ I can’t really talk about the hardest scene in the book, because it’s at the end, and spoilers! But you’ll know when you get there. I BAWLED writing that scene. Seriously, sobbing as I typed.

6. What kind of research did you do for your book?

Loads. I really wanted readers to get a sense of what day-to-day life would be like for someone like them, stuck in the past! Hygeine, food, health, even dogs! There was a while in there that I was worried I’d land on some FBI watch lists. ☺

7. If you could have dinner with one famous person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Oh gosh, what a tough one! I think I might have to say Stephen King. He wrote my favorite book of all time (Dolores Claiborne) and his book “On Writing” inspired me to write GGSE. I’d love to pick his brain.

8. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

London. I’ve never been, and it’s figured so heavily in my writing and reading that it’s definitely somewhere I need to go!

9. What is up next for Gina Lamm?

GGSE’s sequel, GEEK GIRLS DON’T DATE DUKES, will be releasing in September 2013! I’m looking forward to that one. I hope you guys are too!

10. Do you have anything specific you want to say to your readers?

Thanks for giving my book a chance. It’s not easy to let your work out there into the world, and the response I’ve gotten has been amazing. I know how picky I can be when it comes to choosing a book to read, and that you’ve made room on your shelves and in your ereaders for my work truly means a lot. I promise I’ll always do my best to entertain you. ☺ Thanks for having me!

The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl
(Geek Girls #1)
Publishing Date: 3/5/13
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Genre: Historical Romance

Description:
THE STAKES HAVE NEVER BEEN HIGHER…

An avid gamer, Jamie Marten loves to escape into online adventure. But when she falls through an antique mirror into a lavish bedchamber—200 years in the past!—she realizes she may have escaped a little too far.

Micah Axelby, Earl of Dunnington, has just kicked one mistress out of his bed, and isn’t looking to fill it with another—least of all this sassy, nearly naked girl who claims to be from the future. Yet something about her is undeniably enticing…

Jamie and Micah are worlds apart. He’s a peer of the realm. She can barely make rent. She’s wi-fi. He’s horse-drawn. But soon the pair will do anything to avoid a Game Over.
Becoming a magician proved to be less interesting than Gina Lamm had anticipated when she was six, so in her adult life, she’s turned to writing.
This belly-dancing, wisecracking, marshmallow-addicted mother of three energetic fur-children loves nothing more than penning funny, emotional tales of love, lust, and entertaining mishaps.
Married to a real live superhero, she and her family live in North Carolina, surrounded by tobacco farms, possums, and the occasional hurricane.

I think this sounds like such a fun book. I'm always up for a new time travel, and with a geek heroine, that's even better.

This book sounds great! My question would be, are the follow up books going to go back in time to the same time period? Will the friends be able to see each other?

Gina Lamm said...

Hi June!

Subsequent books will be similar time periods, but different years. Time travel is tricky! I wanted to avoid paradoxes and time stream issues. Sort of Doctor Who rules, if you will. ;)
So Jamie goes back to 1816, while he best friend Leah travels to 1817.

Hope that answers your question!

What made you decide to write this genre of books? I'm glad that you do because I love your books. Thanks.

I'm not a big time travel fan, but this sounds so good I am adding it to my TBR!

One of my reviewers read and loved this book and it's been added to my wish list. :) I love time travels as I'm a history nut.

How difficult was it to come up with a plausible way for the time traveling to happen?

I'm really sorry if I miss replying to anyone's comment! Blogger doesn't like me.

Tina, I actually decided to write Time Travel because I couldn't figure out any other way to mash up those two particular ideas, geekdom and Regency England.

And Leslie, oddly enough, I'm VERY picky about my time travel too! It's not usually my #1 pick. But I think (I hope!) you'll like this one. :)

Jen,it was a bit difficult to decide which way to send Jamie back into time! I wanted to avoid ways that might be too similar to what's been done before, but I wanted to use something that people could accept as plausible. With the mirror, the idea for the spell came, and then the spellcaster, and the whole story kind of fell into place. :)

As for everyone else, thank you so much for your comments, and I hope you like the book!!
Gina
