Blog Tour: "Buried" by Kendra Elliot (Interview/Spotlight/Giveaways)

Welcome to our Virtual blog tour stop of "Buried" by Kendra Elliot brought to you by Book Monster Promotions.
Welcome to Book Lovin’ Mamas!

We are so excited to have you here today!

Hi Ladies, I’m happy to be here! This website is my favorite color. A gorgeous dark blue.

1. Can you tell us three things about yourself that we might not already know?

-I hated writing all through school. Even college. Probably because it was assigned writing. I’m helping my HS freshman daughter with her English class this year, and I want to roll my eyes at her assignments.

-I love Hawaii. I lived there for four months after college, and I’ve tried to make it back every year. Our goal is to move there after all my kids are off to college. We both work from home and can live anywhere there is Internet. My husband wants twelve months of heat, soft breezes, and blue ocean waters. I let him twist my arm.

-My husband pulled up deep roots and moved across the United States to see if we had a future together. We were friends, and we knew we needed time to get to know each other better. I had three young kids in school and wouldn’t move. He made a big sacrifice moving by from Maine to Oregon on a chance. It’s my personal romance story.

2. What is your favorite type of character to write? Least favorite?

I have two favorites. The first is the character I already know. Usually they start as a secondary character in a previous book. I love already knowing some facts about them, and how other characters perceive them. Then I can create a great backstory and love interest that turns their life upside down. It’s fabulous to be inside their head for the first time and write the character from the inside. Usually what people have seen from the outside isn’t quite accurate.

The second is the character that appears out of nowhere. It’s happened in each book. I don’t plan on the person, but I’ll need a warm body in a scene as I’m writing it. And then they turn out fabulous and interesting. In the fourth Bone Secrets book, I added a female cop on a death scene and I LOVE HER. I don’t know what I’m going to do with her, but she’s caught my attention in a big way. I just finished the book and sent it to my editor. I’m curious to hear what she thinks.

Least favorite…hmmm. That’s hard. If I don’t like writing them, I don’t do it. A writer has to love their characters, or else they come across as dull. Even the villains, with their nasty backstories and twisted brains, are fun to write. A villain is the hero of his own story. In his mind, he’s fabulous.

3. When you are deep into writing what is your biggest pet peeve?

That life still goes on. The kids still need dinner every night. The house still gets dirty. The dog needs shots. I still need to grocery shop, do laundry, and pay bills. I do have a housecleaner come every other week. That’s a big help, but I get bit antsy when I know she’s coming, because it disrupts my schedule. I plan to go write somewhere else. My husband can work from home just fine when the vacuum is going. Not me.

4. Does music ever play a part in your writing process?

Sadly no. I often wonder if I’m missing out on something. I’ve tried having music on in the background, but I sing along in my head and that interferes with typing. I can’t write with the TV on either. My husband likes the TV on in the background while he works. He runs movies all day long and rarely turns to watch them. We tried working in the same room, but I would get caught up in the show. He works upstairs, and I work downstairs in silence. I work well at Starbucks. That sort of noise doesn’t bother me. I can tune it out. It actually helps me focus, and I’ll often go there when a deadline is looming.

5. Now for the most important question…What can we expect for the future of this series?

There will be at least three more books. I just turned in the fourth. I don’t know the release date, probably early winter. Readers will recognize the main character, Victoria Peres, from HIDDEN and BURIED. She had a story to tell. I was hesitant to write about her, because she intimidates the hell out of me. So far it is titleless. My editor and I have been emailing for two days, trying to work out the title. I just accepted an offer from my publisher for two more Bone Secret books. Who will they be about? We’ll see. Mason Callahan talks to me a lot. He’ll need a book one of these days. My goal is to have them six months apart.

Thank you so much for being here today and we hope you will come back again very soon!

Thanks for having me!!

Eighteen years ago.

He crouched behind the woodpile, carefully watching the little girl through an opening in the stack. She looked about ten-years-old but exuded the confidence of an older child. She carried a calico kitten into the little playhouse near the woodpile, chatting to the animal about tea and cookies. She was dressed for play in cut-off shorts and a lunch stained t-shirt.
The little plastic house had to be stuffy. The weather was hot and dry, but that was good. It meant he’d been comfortable while sleeping the last few nights in the woods, but during the day the heat could be deadly. He’d spotted the big white farmhouse this morning. His first sighting of civilization in…years. He’d slowly crawled to his current hiding spot, moving between shaded spots, watching every movement about the property. An hour ago he’d seen a couple of older teenage boys leave in a beat-up farm truck and a woman let two grey cats out the back door. She looked kind.
He ached to experience some kindness.
He nestled in closer to the wood, resting his head, blinking hard as his vision blurred. He was days past feeling hunger; food barely interested him. He just wanted water. There was a hose near the back door, but it was a good hundred feet away. Maybe he should just approach the woman and ask for help. But he wasn’t going anywhere until he felt safe. Maybe he’d wait until dark. By then—
     “Tabby! Come back!”
He grasped at the woodpile with both hands as the kitten shot by his feet.
     Uh oh.
The little girl burst around the corner of the woodpile and slammed to a stop as she spotted him, her mouth falling open and her eyes widening. She took two cautious steps in his direction, studying him intently.
     He couldn’t move.
He knew he looked bad. His filthy clothes blended with the brown of the wood and dirt. Under the layer of grime on his skin, he suspected he was lily white from lack of sunshine.
Curiosity filled her bright blue eyes and she moved closer, looking him over. Her gaze slowly traveled from his blistered bare feet to the old bloody shirt he’d wrapped around his head. She stopped five feet away. A healthy distance if she needed to make a fast exit, but she’d obviously judged him to not be a danger. She was right. He was about as threatening as a baby seal.
“Do you speak English?” she asked loudly.
He bit his cheek. That was her first question?
“Do you live in the woods? How old are you?” Her gaze narrowed.
He slowly stood, bracing himself against the wood, feeling his head swell with the movement. Her eyes grew wide. He was thin, stork-thin. She could see his bruises and abrasions, and he knew many more were hiding. “Yes, I speak English. No, I don’t live in the woods. And I’m thirteen,” he croaked.
She stood straighter, concerned. “Are you alright?
He touched a gentle finger to his make-shift turban and winced. “Do you have any water?”
She nodded and raced into the playhouse. She reappeared, carefully carrying a blue floral cup and saucer. His hand shook as he lifted the cup to cracked lips. The warm water was heavenly, but he winced as his muscles went through the foreign motion of swallowing. The simple act of her help made him want to cry.
“How did you get those pink circles on your face?”
The cup rattled as he set it back on the saucer. The scars. Cigarettes. The bunker. Stories he could never share without endangering lives. “May I have some more, please?” This time she brought out a little pot and refilled his cup. He drank and then slid back down into his crouch before his legs gave out on him. Nausea gripped him. Did he drink too fast? “Is your mom home?” She nodded.
“Do you want me to get her?”
“Please. Don’t tell anyone else I’m here, okay? Just get your mom.” He leaned his head back against the wood and closed his eyes. Bright colors shifted on the back of his eyelids as the world began to gently spin. Speaking had sapped his energy, but he’d escaped the forest and this family would help him. Now, keep his wits about him and his mouth shut.
     “What’s your name?” she whispered.
He opened his eyes a crack. Her expression was one of simple curiosity. “Chris. Chris Jacobs.” His dry lips twisted. “Could you get your mom? Please?”
She turned and ran, tan legs pumping hard.

My Review:
"Buried" is the third novel in the Bone Secrets Novels and it definitely put me through the ringer.

If you read "Hidden", you would recognize the name Michael Brody since he played a part in the first novel.  We get to have way more of him in "Buried".  In fact, Michael is trying to find answers on what happened to his brother twenty years ago when his school bus disappeared from their trip to the Capitol.
Now some of the children's remains have finally been recovered in a bunker and Michael's brother's remains were not there.  He is more than determined now to find out what happened to the children and now even more his brother.
He is about to search down the only survivor from the bus disappearance and he has to find the survivor first.
Jamie Jacobs's brother, Chris was the only survivor.  He happened to escape the killer and now is in hiding.  He will not even tell his sister where he is.  Michael is now at Jamie's door wanting to know where Chris is...but she has no idea herself and she wants answers now was well.
Now the killer has it out to find Chris as well, and he will do anything to find him.  Even hurt Jamie in the long run.
Michael and Jamie will have to go on a search together to find her brother, but they may end up causing more chaos before they find him.
The killer has his own secret agenda and his boss wants him to cover his tracks that he forgot to do back twenty years ago.
Secrets will be unveiled from both sides and everyone will be thrown off kilter.

Kendra Elliot's writing style is purely amazing.  She knows how to build up a story and to keep you on the edge of your seat.  I swear I was there with the characters looking for Chris and also inside the killer's head trying to figure out why he did what he did and who was his boss.  I wanted him found from the beginning and I definitely believe he got what he deserved.  He definitely was one killer that made me want to go through the book and hurt him.
When the truths finally came out...I think I literally was in shock.  Kendra threw me off so many times and the ending was definitely a shocker as well.
I felt so much sympathy for Michael, Jamie, and Chris.
Michael was one determined reporter who fell head over heels for Jamie and I am glad he finally got to have the love that he was looking for.  He was so hung up on Lacey from "Hidden", he needed to find the right person for him.  He found that right person in Jamie and Jamie needed Michael as well.  She needed someone to tell her she was okay to not have plans.
Chris was the person who really stood out in this story.  The poor guy went through so much and in the end, he still was going through a lot.  He stole me the minute I was in his head and what he was going though and continued to go through.
The mystery to the story is what made me in tears and when it all came together, I was literally bawling.  This had to be one of the saddest romantic suspense stories I have ever read in awhile.  It did have a happy ending, but it took awhile to get there.
This is by far the best novel in the series so far and I look forward to the fourth book even more now.  I want to know who is the next characters to go through a mystery and have a happily ever after.
I give this book 5 full moons and highly recommend it to romantic suspense readers out there.
You can read the first two as standalone, but I recommend you read them in order.  You will want to know Michael from the first book and you will also want to read what Kendra puts the other characters through.
I seriously believe Kendra likes putting her readers through emotional roller coasters.  I will be prepared more ahead of time and that is a promise.
Kendra has become an auto-buy author for me and I look forward to her next romantic suspense novel. =)
Be prepared for an emotional romantic thriller in "Buried" and have the tissues on hand because you will need them.  Don't be like me and having your husband ask why you are bawling like a baby over a book.  He seriously will never understand.

My Review:
"Chilled" is the second book in Kendra Elliot's Bone Secrets Series and I seriously had a had time putting down this book while reading it.  I actually listened to this book as well whenever I could not read the book due to taking care of chores around the house.  I was determined to finish it, it was that good.

Brynn Nealey is a forensic nurse and she's about to make a trip into a very dangerous blizzard to find a plane crash and help out if there are survivors.  She's teamed up with several other searchers and one of them is former US marshal Alex Kinton, who has a plan of his own when he reaches the plane crash.  He has been tracking the plane and when he got word the plane never reached it's destination and he knew something was up.  He puts himself into the search party and he is determined to find one person on that plane and he's hoping the person did not survive.  If he did, then he has a reason to take revenge on what happened to his brother years ago.
Unfortunately, Alex is having a hard time keeping up with what he's supposed to do.  He's supposed to be using the search party for his advantage, but he is having a hard time keeping Brynn out of his head. He is starting to fall for the beautiful forensic nurse and he will do anything to protect her.
None of the other crew know what Alex is here for, and he wants to keep it that way.
While out during the blizzard, the search party will be thrown into chaos.  They will have to fight for their lives in the extreme weather and it will get even worst when they reach the plane crash because they have to protect themselves from the killer that survived the plane crash.
Alex is even more determined to find out why the plane went off course and who is helping the one person he wants dead.

Kendra Elliot gives us yet another thriller full of suspense, romance, and action.  One of the main reasons why I love Kendra Elliot and her writing style is she writes in several points of views.  She takes you into the head of a serial killer, as well as the one man determined to stop the serial killer.
I love how Kendra Elliot gives you two characters who out of dangerous circumstances become attached to each other.  Brynn was one of my favorite characters of the bunch because she did not let anything really bother her.  Even when she found out the truth of Alex, she knew there was a reason why he would do what he did.  She felt compelled to help him.
Alex was a strong character who was very lovable and I commended him for what he was trying to do in this book.  He just wanted to bring the killer to justice for what he did to his brother. He still felt it was his fault, his brother was killed.  I felt so much sympathy for Alex.  He definitely found a perfect partner to help him through what he went through and that was Brynn.

The secondary characters of the story were also very likable and I hope Kendra has a story for some of them.
The real story of the plane crash and how the plane went off course is the big doozy of the story.  You will be in shock like Alex was to find out who was actually helping the serial killer escape.

I give this book 5 full moons and highly recommend it to romantic suspense readers out there.
Be prepared to bundle up and take a trip through a very cold blizzard with the characters to track down one plane crash that could lead them into trying to survive not only due to the weather, but due to one person intent to kill them if they do not let him escape.  He's one killer who also wants to put one certain character in his place.

Author & Series Spotlight: March 2013

This month we chose one of my (FranJessca), favorite romantic suspense authors to spotlight for March since her latest release comes out the end of this month....
If you haven't read her books yet, you definitely need to.  =)
And her series we chose to spotlight....

(Taken from Kendra's website)
As a kid, I read and read and read. Laura Ingalls, Nancy Drew, and Trixie Belden were my close companions, and I was never without a book in hand. Today, mysteries are my primary reading genre. I enjoy Lee Child, Karen Rose, Robert Crais, and Tami Hoag. But I also love a sweeping historical novel by Diana Gabaldon or a contemporary romance by Rachel Gibson.
I decided to try my hand at novel writing after I read a newspaper article about NaNoWriMo. Heck, I can do that. I sat down and wrote a contemporary romance but kept tripping over dead bodies in each chapter. I got the hint and my stories evolved into romantic suspense.
I joined my local Romance Writers of America chapter, the Rose City Romance Writers, and found a fabulous community dedicated to educating its members about writing and publishing. Book purchases are tax deductable?? I also belong to International Thriller Writers and the Kiss of Death Chapter of RWA.
In 2010, my manuscript, Stronger Than Bone, was a finalist in RWA’s prestigious Golden Heart® contest. This same manuscript caught the attention of Jennifer Schober of Spencerhill Literary Agency and she became my agent. The book is now published as HIDDEN.
I grew up in the lush Pacific Northwest and still live there with my husband, three daughters, two cats, and a Pomeranian. In the real world, I'm a dental hygienist who is fascinated with forensics, refuses to eat anything green, and loves a good Mai Tai on the beach on Kauai.
