Guest Post: The Allure of the Wings

As this amazing blog tour winds down and I get to ‘appear’ on this fantastic site, I wanted to take a second to really speak about the Angel Chronicle series. Until Next Time was well-received by all of you out there, and you have no idea how humbled I am by that - but the greatest part for me is that Emily and Matt have become a part of your lives and imaginations, so that’s something we can all share without ever meeting each other.

Ten years ago angels were not ‘in.’ In fact, the form responses from agents and publishers were a mile long turning Emily and Matt down (if you’re a writer you’ll know all about this one). Among those, when I would receive an actual response from a real, live person, the message was always the same: angels could never be a large part of the literary world - especially YA fiction - because of the fact that readers wouldn’t accept religion. I was younger then, guys, and that particular line upset me for the simple fact that Emily and Matt are not about religion.

I know, there are some shaking of the heads out there, but they really aren’t. They are two teens who come from an extraordinary place who have to figure out life. They have to defend, protect, go up against some serious bad guys, and fall in love - and they have to do this in a place they’ve never been before with only the ‘remembrance’ of each other to get them through. Like any other teen, when they go ‘home’ they go to a place with teachers and friends who’ve helped them along the way. Maybe their home has more cool magical stuff in it, but it’s still home.

When you read Until Next Time, Emily is very much a girl who believes in her training and her best friend, but she still feels like she’s out there fluttering in the breeze. When she gets mad or confused, she goes home and finds her friends sitting around playing cards, racing horses, and just having a good time in their ‘lives.’ And when she and Matt need help or a shoulder to cry on, they talk to their brother or their father - just like the rest of us do. They get mad, happy, sad, devastated and confused as they head through life trying to figure out who, in fact, they really are.

I am very pleased that the majority of readers are not labeling Matt and Emily with ‘religious overtones’ - whatever that may be. Emily, like the author, has a hard time with all of it and lives every day trying to figure out why there’s so much negative stuff IF all this stuff we believe in is supposedly true. And Matt - well…Matt’s that guy who wants to be the star quarterback and the warrior hero, but his good will and kindness sort of go right out the window when he’s faced with losing love, so he’s struggling, too. You know…like all of us normal people. J

In the end, as these books go forward, I hope all readers really get the gist of what Emily and Matt are all about. The only thing they, and everyone else around them want, is to bring back the belief we used to have in ourselves. They offer hope, and they take people away from the bad economy, jobless rates, hating high school, wanting that perfect boyfriend or girlfriend, and the harshness that comes from trying to figure out who we are as we grow up. Divinity is in our hearts; it’s not in a book or a term; it’s not about what or who you believe in - it’s all about having the faith and hope in your heart for another. Emily and Matt have that for each other, and no matter what happens (hopefully) they will keep that no matter what the cost.

This is for readers, authors, and anyone who has an imagination. Never accept ‘no’ - not when you ‘know’ that what you’re trying to say encompasses everyone out there. The ‘winged ones’ have an allure that’s not based on religion, they’re simply the best friend you wish you knew, and everyone can come to love the fact that the only thing Emily and Matt can count on is THEIR best friend. Next up for them…some war, some heartache, some adventure in a gilded world, and a completely ‘out-of-the-box’ twist where all that true love is concerned.

Until Next Time, Everybody!

 Summary
How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?
Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.
When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.
From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.
