"Undeclared" by Jen Frederick (Spotlight/Interview/Giveaway)
Undeclared
(Woodlands #1)
Author: Jen Frederick
Publisher: Jen Frederick
Release Date: 4/28/13
Genre: New Adult
Description
For four years, Grace Sullivan wrote to a Marine she never
met, and fell in love. But when his deployment ended, so did the letters. Ever
since that day, Grace has been coasting, academically and emotionally. The one
thing she’s decided? No way is Noah Jackson — or any man — ever going to break
her heart again.
Noah has always known exactly what he wants out of life.
Success. Stability. Control. That’s why he joined the Marines and that’s why
he’s fighting his way — literally — through college. Now that he’s got the rest
of his life on track, he has one last conquest: Grace Sullivan. But since he
was the one who stopped writing, he knows that winning her back will be his
biggest battle yet.
This is a mature New Adult book. I see that it is classified
as YA - not sure how to change that - but I wanted to be clear that it has
explicit love scenes in the story.

Welcome to Book Lovin’ Mamas! We
are so glad to have you here today!
1. Tell us 3 things about
yourself that readers may not be able find out about you on the web.
a) I like lists. Lots of lists. I have lists of lists.
b) I wish I had a cat but I'm really allergic to
pet dander so I console myself by looking at cute kitten pictures on the
internet but that actually only serves to increase my longing for a cat. I guess I'm a little like my heroine, Grace,
with self destructive tendencies.
c) I love sweet tea even though I am a
Northerner. Sweet tea is a staple of Southern households and I had it once
visiting a friend and got hooked on it.
I looked up how to make it once and shuddered at the amount of sugar I
had to put in it. I like drinking it
without knowing the caloric intake.
2. What does a typical writing
day look like for you?
I have a full time job so I work
the writing in and around my job and my family.
I try to write 2000 words a day and I break that up by writing first
thing in the morning and last thing at night.
Sometimes, though, I'll write for hours at night and get very little
sleep. That is both a good and bad problem
for me. Good because it means I'm really into the book and bad because I'll pay
for that lack of sleep down the road.
3. Who are some of your favorite
authors?
In the New Adult category, it
would be Tammara Webber and Colleen Hoover. I also love Samantha Young's
contemporaries, Julie James, Nalini Singh, Meljean Brook, and Jessica
Clare.
4. When you’re not writing, what
are your hobbies/interests?
I'm starting to run by doing the
couch to 5 K program and I'd love to run a half marathon someday if I can fit
that in between the job, the writing, and all the time I spend reading other
authors' awesome books. I'm still
waiting to achieve that elusive runner's high and beginning to wonder if it is
a myth. Do you know?
5. Fun Question: Describe
yourself in 3 words.
Loyal. Loving. Independent.
6. Fun Question: If you could travel
to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Italy! I went once shortly after I got out of
college and I've always wanted to go back.
The country is so rich in history.
The "new" buildings are 200 years old. In Rome, you walk down a street and see
ancient ruins nearly everywhere. There
are water fountains that populate the city that are fed by the ancient
aqueducts. It's just an amazing place.
I want to travel all over the
world, though, because when you step out of your own hometown, you realize how
big and extraordinary the world is. You
learn to appreciate the things that make your town or people unique while at
the same time appreciating the different elements of other people's culture. As you travel and meet new people, I think your
heart grows bigger.
7. Do you ever base your
characters on people you know in real life?
I haven't although I think there
are pieces of me and my friends in these books.
If I did base my characters wholly on real life people, it would be the
good characters and never the negative traits. I wouldn't ever want a person I
loved to read a book of mine and feel like I had somehow portrayed them in a
bad light.
8. Can you tell us a little bit
about Undeclared and what’s to come in the future for the Woodlands series?
Undeclared is the story of a
former Marine who pursues his penpal of four years. He has a lot of explaining to do because he
stopped writing to Grace after he separated from the military. As you can imagine, Grace was crushed by this
and is very wary of Noah's advances. But
who can resist a handsome Marine, right?
I saw a bumper sticker the other
day that said "Stay safe. Sleep with a Marine." LOLOL. Grace eventually realizes that resistance is
futile.
The rest of the series will focus
on each one of the guys that lives at The Woodlands: Bo, Noah's best friend;
Finn, the house flipper; Adam, the guitarist and songwriter; and Mal, who will
close out the series.
My plan is to release Bo's story
(Unspoken) sometime in late August and Finn's (Unmarked) in December. Adam and Mal's stories will be released in
2014.
9. What was your inspiration when writing
Undeclared?
I don't know if there is a person
who doesn't have someone they know who was deployed. This is a generation of young men who are
touched by war and I'm not sure we can ever truly appreciate their courage and
sacrifice.
I wanted to write about one of
those young men and give him a happy ever after. Happy endings are what I love to read and I
couldn't imagine writing a story without one.
10. Do you have anything specific
you want to say to your readers?
Thank you so much for giving a
new author like me a chance. You all
have so many choices and it's an honor for you to choose my book to read. I
love to hear from readers. They help power
me forward on days that I am stuck and give me inspiration to continue on.
Thank you so much and we hope you
will come back again! :)
