Blog Tour: "Tempted by Evil" by Shannon Morton & Amber Lynn Natusch (Guest Post/Review)
Welcome to our virtual book tour stop of "Tempted by Evil" by Amber Lynn Natusch and Shannon Morton brought to you by Pure Textuality.
I
have a confession to make. I have a
thing for bad boys. Always have. Blame it on my kindergarten crush or my high
school boyfriend, just don't tell my husband.
But something about those dark, broody, mysterious guys who do whatever
they please and have a difficult time expressing emotion properly seals the
deal every single time. Officially labeled, "damaged goods," these
guys are the ones we love in books, TV, and movies, but would run screaming
from in reality if we ever actually came face to face in a relationship. Thus,
I write about their dark deeds rather than seeking one out in real life (my
husband is grateful for this). And that's what this scene in the novel is for;
to give you a peek at one of my favorite characters in the story. This is
our first real glimpse into Merrick's personality and Aspen's response to him.
Merrick is the quintessential bad boy plus. On top of being the dark, brooding,
mysterious guy, he is also wicked intelligent with a penchant for books and
music―and nothing is sexier than a bad boy with a kickass IQ.
So, without further ado, I give you
Aspen and Merrick in the library scene.
Walking absentmindedly through the aisles of
materials once more, I
found myself gazing up the darkened staircase as I
passed. The feeling of
someone watching me was so strong that I
involuntarily shivered and
scanned the rest of the library, including the
check-out desk, to ensure that I
was still the only patron inside. Indeed, it was
only the librarian and me, and
he was still busy organizing the pile on his desk.
I brushed off my senseless
worry and marched myself back over to the table
where my collection of
take-home books sat proudly waiting for me. The
cover of the top volume
drew my attention as it had on the shelf, a girl
with dark hair , ivory skin, and
painted ruby lips.
“Memoirs of a Geisha?” a low voice asked
incredulously from just
behind me. “I had you pegged for an Austen girl. ”
I spun around to find a wall of obsidian staring me
in the face. T aking
a small step back, I looked up into the light-green
eyes of a face I was
certain I recognized.
“You’re the guy from the café the other night, ” I
blurted out, equal
parts question and statement of fact.
“Am I?” he countered sarcastically, leaning his
face in toward mine just
“Am I?” he countered sarcastically, leaning his
face in toward mine just
enough to make me exceptionally nervous.
“Um, aren’t you?” I asked stupidly, finding it
difficult to actually recall
the other night with any clarity at the moment.
He just stared at me as though I were some
curiosity that perplexed
him, but he clearly had no intention of answering
my question.
“I’m Aspen. ” The words were out of my mouth before
my brain fully
registered our conversation from the other night.
“Aspen Thomas. ”
“I know, ” the stranger replied with a slight nod
of his head.
“And you are . . . ?”
“Amused, ” he countered, though he seemed less
entertained than he
claimed to be.
“Really?” The frustration at being the source of
his personal
amusement was evident in my tone. “Did you come
here solely to harass
me?”
“Hardly, ” he replied, looking at my stack on the
table. A flicker of
genuine interest sparked in his eyes. “I came for
the books. ”
“Well, then, ” the words tasted bitter in my mouth
even before I said
them aloud, “don’t let me keep you. ”
A small smile erupted on his lips as he looked to
my pile of books and
then back to me. “No problem. It’s just a lot to
carry. . . I was going to offer
you a hand. ”
Of course he was. My redheaded temper had gotten me
into trouble
yet again.
“Oh, ” I said, feeling like a repentant child. “I
brought a book bag with
me and most of these are pretty small. ”
“Indeed, ” he replied, running his fingers through
his jet black waves.
“You have some great texts there. Kerouac and
Salinger are two of my
favorites. ”
“I’ve always wanted to read Catcher in the Rye!” I
exclaimed a bit too
enthusiastically.
“Now you can. ” He smiled down at me as he turned
around to walk
through the stacks, calling over his shoulder ,
“And the name’s Merrick. ”
“Merrick, ” I repeated aloud, tasting the name on
my tongue.
He stopped and turned around to face me once more,
his mysterious
sage gaze penetrating mine.
“Yes?”
“Oh, ” I stammered, unprepared for him to have
overheard my verbal
sampling. “I was just curious about your t-shirt.
Who’s The Machine and why
do you feel the need to Rage Against them?”
If I hadn't known better , I would have sworn that
the slightest chuckle
escaped his lips.
“The machine would be the status quo, I guess, ” he
replied, shaking
his head and turning to go. “And most everyone
feels compelled to deviate a
little from time to time. ”
Mesmerized by both him and his words, I watched him
walk away,
each step feeling like a call to some part of me to
follow after him. He
seemed to be the impossible combination of every
powerful male lead and
bad boy antagonist that I'd ever encountered on
paper , and for whatever
reason, however irrational it might have been, I
wanted to know more about
Tempted by Evil
(Light & Shadow Trilogy #1)
Publishing Date: 11/19/12
Genre: YA Paranormal

Description:
A sheltered girl.
The perfect boy.
A mysterious stranger.
Random messages delivering a sobering prophecy plague Aspen's existence. With every curious encounter, her sanity wavers further. Before long, Aspen finds herself balancing the fate of humanity on her shoulders, until a single act turns her world upside down. She finds herself alone, isolated from those she thought she could trust.
Alone to damn the world,

My Review:
I have read the first book in the Caged series by Amber Lynn Natusch and jumped at the chance to read another book from her, as well as try a book by Shannon Morton.
I am always looking to find more Authors that will keep me reading and leave me hanging at the end of the book.
"Tempted by Evil" is not a usual YA book that I would find myself reading, but the description of it was interesting and I could not wait to find out who was the sheltered girl, the perfect boy, and the mysterious stranger.
Aspen who has only life in a convent, never knew her parents. All she knows is that they died when she was really young. She is not living in the convent and trying to make her life carry on. She meets a boy who is willing to help her in anyway he can. He gives her a home and even gets her a job thanks to his parents.
When Aspen, comes across another stranger while working, he intrigues her. He is always there watching her for some reason.
Aspen starts to hear voices and see people other people cannot see. In fact, she is starting to question herself.
When she finds out the truth on what is happening to her, she learns that the people she thought she could trust and the people who took care of her, are the ones who want her live out the prophecy, but in a evil way.
Aspen does not know who to trust now...the boy who gave her a new life may be tempting her in the wrong way and the other stranger told her to not trust anyone, but herself.
Is the prophecy being told really true. Is she the one to determine the fate of mankind and the world?
My thoughts after reading "Tempted by Evil" is that I need to know what happens now after reading that cliffhanger, but I do have to say the book did not peek my interest until towards the end. When the truth came out, I was neglecting my duties at home to find out happened next to Aspen and find out the truth about Merrick ( the stranger ) and the real truth about Julian (the boy who helped Aspen) because there was a another motive with him. I just could not figure it out until the end.
I love the fact the book was different from what I have read before. Prophecies and towards the end, the truth of Aspen's parents and why she is considered apart of the prophecy and what she actually supposed to do.
I give the beginning and the middle of the book 3 stars...but the end 4 stars, which is the reason why the my review is 3.5 stars for total. I am planning on reading the next book because Shannon and Amber definitely had me in shock after Aspen chose her path.
I would have chosen the other side...Ahh!
Aspen has her reasons, I guess.
I recommend this book to readers who love the YA paranormal genre. If you are a fan of Amber's Caged Series, you'll definitely want to check out this new trilogy from her and Shannon.

Blog Tour: "Monster Within" by Lola Rayne (Guest Post/Giveaway)
Welcome to our stop on the "The Monster Within" by Lola Rayne brought to you by Pure Textuality.
Character Profile: Gideon
Companion to Nicole’s profile, this is my twisted take on Gideon’s about me:
…6 weeks before the events of “The Monster Within” in what Tomahawk calls an apartment…
Normally Spitfire wouldn’t go anywhere near a door that was ajar in a building that would have to be renovated to qualify as a shit hole, but this was Tomahawk he was dealing with, and with Tomahawk anything went. “Uh, Tom, you in here man?” He shouted as he used the very tips of his fingers to cautiously push the door open.”
“Back here!” Came the shouted reply, in Tomahawk’s voice, from the furthest corner of the gloom.
Picking his way past debris he didn’t really want to identify he couldn’t quite keep his thoughts to himself. “Dude, this place is disgusting, how can you live like this?”
“Hey, I’ve bunked with you man… you’re not exactly Mister fucking Clean.”
“That was when we were living in less than hospitable conditions with the constant fear of death hanging over our heads. Out here in the real world I prefer to not live in filth.” He didn’t bother to add that there was not clean, and then there was whatever this classified as. Tom would just take it personally and the last thing this place needed was a fight.
Luckily he was saved from further comment by the one person even Tom could never get mad at. Well, could never stay mad at. “Hey Tomah… oh God, did something die in here?”
With a sneer, that Spitfire was now close enough to see, Tom gave his frumpy reply. “When did you all become such girls?”
Ignoring the jibe, Spitfire asked, “you called Icarus too? What the hell do you need help with?” He left off the “other than cleaning” from the end. Judging from the look of horror on Icarus’s face it wasn’t needed.
“Computers broken.” He gestured vaguely towards something that might have been a computer. If you squinted.
Which Spitfire was doing as he tried to assess just what kind of mess Tom had gotten him into now. “What do you mean broken?” Icarus didn’t wait for an answer, gingerly walking towards the computer on his tip toes before sitting in what was probably a computer chair as carefully as possible.
“I mean it doesn’t work. It’s fucking broken.”
“Yes but broken how?”
By this point Icarus must have had some luck powering up the computer, because he suddenly gasped and practically jumped from the chair. “What did you do?” He shouted at the other man.
“Nothing!” It was the same tone he always used when he’d fucked something up royally. Even if he didn’t know exactly how he’d fucked up.
“What did he do?” Spitfire inquired.
Whatever it was, it was bad enough that Icarus seemed hesitant to actually touch the keyboard. “Well he downloaded every piece of disease infested porn he could find for starters.”
“What do you mean diseased? They looked healthy enough to me.”
“Not the girls you idiot, the files. You have more spy and malware than should be possible. In fact, I don’t even think you have an operating system anymore, I think it’s just a massive virus.” Kind of like everything else in this room.
“Can you fix it?” Tomahawk asked, wringing his hands and looking between Icarus and Spitfire. He always did this. He would always get defense and then get sheepish. And like the idiots that they all were, the rest of his squad brothers would always bail him out.
“ I can firebomb it…” Or, you know, maybe their most amenable brother would finally choose now to put his foot down.
“Damn it!” Tom said as he collapsed to the floor. What was hopefully harmless dust and not malignant spores flew wildly due to the impact.
“What were you trying to do anyways?” Spitfire asked, if for no other reason that because the thought of spores was causing his throat to close up.
“Get Gideon laid.” Tom said to the floor. And even though he missed the twin looks of confused shock that Spitfire and Icarus gave that statement, he followed up with “don’t look at me like that,” all the same. “Guy needs to bust a nut before he busts a blood vessel in his brain and dies.”
“Like that’s really a thing.” Icarus snorted and elbowed Spitfire.
So it clearly shocked the smaller man when Spitfire backed Tom up. “Actually, he makes a good point. Gideon has been a bit stressed lately.”
“And getting laid will fix that?” Icarus asked rhetorically.
This time it was Tom who was acting as Spitfire’s twin when they answered the question Icarus clearly felt deserved no answer with a deadpan “yes.”
Tomahawk finished the thought on his own though, bolstered some by the unexpected support. “So the way I see it we have two options. One: get him an escort.”
“That’ll go over about as well as a fart in church.” Spitfire interrupted.
“Exactly! Which brings me to option two.” He was clearly more excited now, as he gestured to his diseased computer.
“Oh please don’t tell me you’ve figured out a way to actually have sex with your computer.” Icarus asked as he backed away even further.
“Don’t be an idiot,” Tom pouted, “it’s what’s on the computer.”
“The porn?” It must have been spores that Tom kicked up… because this conversation was making less sense by the minute.”
“No! It’s the… do either of you have a lab top or something? It’s easier if I show you.”
“A lab top?” Icarus said in the way that all computer geniuses do when they’re faced with people who can’t even double click a mouse.
“Yeah… you know, one of those little computers you use at coffee shops.”
“It’s not a…” Icarus started, but before he could work up a good head of “this is what a computer is and how it works” steam, Spitfire stopped him.
“Don’t. Just don’t. I’ve got one.” He pulled his own laptop from its bag and looked around, suddenly questioning if he should’ve insisted on heading to a coffee shop for this part of the demonstration. Before he could voice the thought though, Tom had swipped the laptop from his clutches and walked over a door that was being supported by cinderblocks to form the world’s shittiest table. Without needing help he powered up the laptop and typed in a few commands before turning the screen around to face his two friends.
Spitfire was going to question how the other man, who so recently acted as if he knew nothing about computers, knew how to get that far, but he glimpsed at the screen. Then he did a double take. It was a good thing he hadn’t been drinking at the time, or it would’ve been a spit take instead. Actually, assessing what was on the screen carefully he came to realize it wasn’t such a good thing that he didn’t have a drink. Or seven. “You didn’t.”
“This is a good idea.” Tom said in a matter-of-fact voice.
“No, it’s really not. Gideon is going to kill you. Painfully. Probably by removing your scrotum by force and shoving it down your windpipe.” And Spitfire knew just who would be joining him if they did not leave right now.
“Is that even possible?” Icarus asked, instead of fleeing like he should have.
“Gideon would find a way.” Spitfire considered taking his laptop, but it was too late for the device. It had been compromised by Tom’s scheme and would now incur his wrath.
“No not that. That!” He pointed at the screen, but Spitfire wouldn’t look. He refused to be any more a part of this than he already had been.
“Of course it is.” Tom said as he ruffled Icarus’s hair. Spitfire looked. And then Spitfire sighed. Crap… he was going down with the ship now, because there was no way he was letting Tom leave that on there.
“Yeah, but a) that isn’t how you spell it and b) that’s not something you can just ask a stranger for…”
“Are you sure?” Tom asked, as if he walked around asking strangers for something so obscene all the time. Actually, he probably did.
“Positive.”
“But it would weed out so many people…” Tom argued.
“Yeah, like all of them.” Spitfire retorted. “Icarus, back me up on this one.”
“I’m still not sure physics would allow it.” He said as he tipped his head to the side. Like his mind just needed to be at a different angle and then this would make sense. Spitfire just pinched the bridge of his nose.
Tom slapped him on the back so hard the smaller man rocked forward. “Stick with me kid and I’ll show you that physics have no place in the bedroom.”
“Not literally with you though, right? I mean I like you and all, dude… but not like that.”
“How about we just focus on fixing this.” Spitfire interjected. No way was he taking that chance.
“So you’re in?”
“If it’s fix this or picture the two of you having inventive sex here on this disgusting floor? Yeah, I’m in… So… what does Gideon like again?”

The Monster Within
by: Lola Rayne
Publishing Date: 10/2/12
Description:
Sometimes the monster that haunted you as a child truly is real...
All it took was one phone call to bring Nicole Jones's life crumbling down around her. Now a nightmare she thought she'd left in her past is back, and he's not exactly bringing her candy and flowers. While fleeing, in a non-terrified fashion, she meets a menacing man in a dark alley. Then promptly passes out at his feet.
Gideon Evans hasn't exactly been having the best run of luck, but all that changes when a buxom little blonde collapses right in front of him. Or at least he thinks it has. It doesn’t take him long to realize that bombshell is an appropriate description for more than just her looks. Now he's facing several problems, including a surprising enemy, his own dark past, and a rather inconvenient case of lust.
Can they work together to battle the nightmare that's chasing them? Or will they succumb to the monster within?

My Review:
"The Monster Within" is the first book from Lola Rayne and after reading it, I'm ready for the second book already.
Nicole Jone's for years has been having a great life, trying to forget about her past, until one day, she gets a call from her worst nightmare. Someone she thought was dead is now out to get here.
She's all upset about it...and when she tries to go home the same day, she ends up passing out in front of a stranger, she thought could be the person who wants her. Instead, it is just someone she bumped into by accident and he was following her to make she was not in danger and to keep an eye on her.
Gideon, never thought he would run into his beautiful woman and follow her. When she passes out in front of him, she knows something is wrong with her, so he takes her home to keep her safe.
Gideon is not your normal person though because inside of him, is a monster that wants to claim Nicole as his and keep her safe with him. He knows that Nicole is his mate and his other self recognized her from the beginning when he followed her. He is determine find out what made Nicole all upset that day she passed out in front him and he will do anything to protect her.
What Gideon does not realize though is, he will have to protect himself as well, when it comes to Nicole's past coming back to haunt her.
My thoughts on "Monster Within" was it was a really great start to Lola Rayne's Mounting Darkness Series. The characters she created had great chemistry and I was able to click with them very well.
Nicole kicked butt and Gideon kind of scared the crap out of me when I found out what he really was and what he was made to do.
There was some very steamy, erotic moments between Nicole and Gideon in the book, so be prepared to maybe take a cold shower afterwards. (Yes...Lola wrote some sexy, steamy scenes)
It was a short novella and only had touched a little bit and I felt it could have been more...but in the end I was really happy with what happened.
Lola did leave me hanging at the end. I definitely want to know what will happen next, especially since Nicole and Gideon found out something else that I'm really curious about.
I recommend this book to paranormal romance readers out there and for readers who loves reading short novellas.
"The Monster Within" definitely was a great start to one amazing, sexy, paranormal romance series.
Currently the book is only $0.99 at Amazon. =)

A DAY IN ROBIN’S WRITING LIFE
I’m lounging on the upper deck of a large cruise ship,
little umbrella drink in my hand. Wearing my bikini and sunglasses, a constant
cool breeze keeping me cool as I do nothing, but relax.
I hear the sound of a horn honking and it continues to grow
louder. My eyes fly open, and it’s my lab barking to go out for his morning
constitution. Argh!
I look at the clock hanging on the bedroom wall. Five a.m.,
the same as every other morning. I roll out of bed and stretch. I could
probably stretch a mile, but don’t because I’d have to walk all the way back.
After I let the dogs out—yes, I have four—I grab a shower,
then head straight to the kitchen where I know my husband has a fresh pot of
coffee waiting. He loves me, what can I say. I tiptoe around because my
youngest daughter and granddaughter are still sleeping.
I watch the early morning news, then at six a.m. when my
hubby leaves for work, I grab my laptop and coffee, then head to the front
porch where I have a small card table set up. I live in the country so it’s
quiet and serene, until the neighbor’s rooster starts crowing. Some mornings he
starts crowing long before daylight. Those are the mornings I lie in bed and
think about knocking him off his roost.
I rake back my wet tangles, take a deep breath and open my
laptop. After I pull up the file I think, okay
where was Genevieve when I last saw her? Ah, yes, I remember. I scroll back
up the page a few paragraphs and read just to refresh my memory and get back in
my YA frame of mind.
I usually write until around eight when my granddaughter,
Ryleigh (nine months) wakes. Then, it’s put my writing on hold so I can change
and feed her. If her mom is off work I let her sleep. We play for a bit, she
eats a few dried Fruit Loops with me, and it’s nap time.
I get another hour to write—the phone rings. “What’s up?” It’s
my oldest daughter. All my kids know I do most of my writing during the day,
but especially early in the morning. While I’m on the phone with her, I keep
glancing at my time ticking away on
my pc.
When I finally convince her to let me call her later, I fix
another cup of coffee and sit back down. Only this time nothing happens. Come on, Genevieve. She doesn’t say a
word. Instead, she scowls at me, arms folded and tapping her foot. You know how
teens are. They think the world revolves around them. She’s punishing me for
making her put her story on hold.
I ignore her and attempt a light copy edit—the phone rings
again. “Hey, Mom.” It’s my next to youngest daughter. After watching even more
of my time tick away. I convince her
to call my oldest daughter where they can chat with each other.
I reheat my coffee and sit back down. Again. Are you over being mad, Genevieve? When
she turns her back and stomps off into the dark recesses of my mind, I take it
as a sure sign she’s angry. Please come
back. I’ll turn my ringer off. I promise, no more phone interruptions.
After several minutes of coaxing, I finally get her to come
back. just as we are ready to pick back up, I hear the muffled sounds of
Ryleigh crying.
I jump up and stick my head in the door. “Erin,” I yell.
“Wake up and get Ryleigh. I really need to write today.”
After two more times of opening the front door and yelling
at my youngest daughter to wake up, she finally does and the crying stops.
I sigh as I sit back down. Sorry, Genevieve. She is seething. You know how teens and young adults are. After all, you are one. DUH!
We argue a few minutes, then get back to work. I get lost in my writing and the
next thing I know it’s early afternoon. Time to grab a bite to eat, start the
laundry and start supper before getting on with the rest of my day.
