Interview with Julie Ann Walker

Please welcome one of our FAVE Authors, Julie Ann Walker to Book Lovin' Mamas today, where we had a chance to interview her about her SEXY, Action-packed new Series, Black Knights Inc.

Website | Facebook | Twitter
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word. Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper. During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for something to stretch my intellectual capabilities,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics. “I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read for an entire day.” It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion. “Thankfully, my husband – my own personal hero – encouraged my decision to write full time.” Now Julie lives on beautiful Lake Shore Drive with a view that sometimes competes with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, travel, and…reading, of course!

Hi Julie! Thank you for sitting down to chat with us. We are so happy to have you here on Book Lovin' Mamas!

 1. Tell us 5 things that readers may not be able to find about you on the web.

Oooh, straight out of the bag you're asking me to give up my secrets! Well played! LOL! No, but seriously, I suppose there are a few things I can share without forever having to hide my head in shame...
1.) A love gin and tonics. I know, I know, it's totally an old man's drink. But to me they're so cool and refreshing, so what's not to like?
2.) My favorite color is red. Most people choose something a little more soothing for a favorite color, but I'm drawn to red's vibrancy and... and... danger? Perhaps there's something in my psyche that leans toward the hazardous side of life; I DO write romantic suspense, after all!
3.) I make a mean Mediterranean pasta dish. It has olives and sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese. Oh. My. God. It's heaven in a bowl. Not to mention a total carb-fest. Nom, nom, nom!
4.) In the warm months, I ride twenty miles a day on my bicycle. In the cold months, I hibernate. I'm much like a grizzly bear in that respect...
5.) One time, in Hawaii, I almost died in a volcanic eruption. (You're not getting any more out of me than that!)

 2. Tell us a little bit how you came up with the idea of the Black Knights Inc. books?

I knew I wanted to write military romantic suspense. I mean, a man in uniform is about as yummy as it gets, am I right? But I also knew my series, if I wanted it to sell, needed to have a hook. Something to distinguish it from the rest of the books out there. And what's the opposite of a stoic, dependable soldier? Well, that'd be the Harley-riding rebel. So I took a little from column A and a lot from column B; I stirred until frothy and voila! 007 meets Sons of Anarchy... or, as I like to say, Black Knights Inc.

3. Do you have any writing traditions when writing a book? (Do you have to listen to music, etc.)

I listen to music at all times EXCEPT when I'm writing. I have this crazy talent for movie quotes and song lyrics. So if a song is playing while I'm writing, I sing along to it. And before too long, I'm typing what I'm singing in my head - and that's not good. But music certainly inspires me. When I'm listening to it while doing anything else, I often find myself running to my notepad to jot down ideas.

4. What's the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part of writing for me is the part where I actually put my butt in the chair and write. My stories are almost fully formed in my head before my fingers ever touch the keyboard, so I have a hard time taking the time to type them out. I mean, I already know what happens. But you guys don't... so I persevere. Le sigh... ;-)

5. Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably...

...on my bicycle, travelling with my hubby, or fighting with my self-control over whether or not I should have that third helping of Mediterranean pasta.

6. If you could trade places with one of your characters who would it be and why?

Oh, I'd have to say I'd trade places with Becky. Not only is she tough-as-nails, but she gets to go to bed with Frank "Boss" Knight every night. I mean, I always fall in love with my heroes, but there's just something about Frank...

7. Who designed the covers of the Black Knights Inc. books? (because they are BEYOND sexy) =)

They are smokin' hot, right? And the lovely design folks at Sourcebooks deserve the honors. Of course, I have to give a shout-out to the custom bike-building community, too. Because those motorcycles you see on the covers are not computer generated. Nope. Those are REAL! And, to my great honor, there were talented designers out there who were generous enough to let me use their creations for my covers.

8. If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I actually DO travel quite a bit. It's a dream of mine to visit 100 countries before I die. So far, I've seen around forty - which sounds like a lot, but it also means I still have a long way to go. I'll tell you this much, I think my next adventure is a going to be a motor-scooter tour of Vietnam. If I ever make it past this current deadline, that is...

9. If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Easy. I'd fly. Can you imagine the exhilaration, the freedom? Oh... I think it'd be divine!

10. Is there any specific you would like to say to the readers out there?

Thank you for reading!

Quick Short Answer Questions

11. Favorite Restaurant Quartino -

northern Italian fare served in a Spanish tapas style setting. Sounds complicated, but it's really not. And the food? No words...

12. Favorite Place to Write/Read

I write in my home office. Like I said, I need structure or the pages never actually materialize. But I love to read in my big, cushy, leather recliner.

13. Favorite Movie

Oh, this is tough. I love going to the movies and I watch a ton of them. But I'd have to say Out of Africa is one I can sit down and enjoy over and over again.

14. Favorite Singer/Band

Green Day. Did I just date myself?

15. Favorite Tv Show

Currently, it's Breaking Bad. But there's only one more season. NOOOOOO!!!!

Anna's Favorite Book of the Summer
Misplaced Princess
by: Mari Carr

Description
Annie Prince has impetuously flown halfway ’round the world to visit a sexy cowboy she met online—only to find herself stranded in Sydney. Seems she and Dylan crossed wires, and he’s on his way to New York. His twin, Hunter, saves the day and whisks her back to the family cattle station. Hunter’s as easy on the eyes as Dylan, and even easier to talk to. Annie might have flown to Oz to meet one brother, but soon sparks are flying with the other.

Hunter considered Dylan a dumb arse for jetting off to America for some stranger—until he met Annie. Turns out the New Yorker is a smart, funny, hard-working jillaroo…and hotter than the Aussie desert. Hunter’s not normally one to poach his brother’s women, but he can’t keep his hands, lips, tongue and other body parts off this sexy city girl.

When raging lust leads to emotional attachment, where does that leave Annie and Hunter when her vacation comes to an end—or when Dylan finds out?

Anna's Drink Choice
Margarita Cocktail

Recipe:
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz premium triple sec (preferably Cointreau)

Rim the glass with lime juice and dip in salt. Shake all ingrdients with ice, strain into glass and serve.

She’s the good girl he’s kept at arm’s length...

My Review
I received a complimentary copy of "Hell on Wheels" from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
And oh...was I excited to read "Hell on Wheels"...when I was approved for it.  Sourcebooks has some amazing authors...and I could not wait to read Julie Ann Walker's first book to the Black Knights, Inc Series.
Let me just get this out before hand...Julie Ann Walker definitely knows how to write a book where I had hard time choosing what should take priority first...either I would read "Hell on Wheels" and finish it...or I would work on college assignments.  Which do you think won?  =)

Nate Weller, otherwise known as "Ghost" has gone through so much.  He used to be in the Marines, but he's working for the government doing work that someone has to do.  He's now apart of the Black Knights which looks to be a motorcycle shop at first...but it's not really.  He just lost his best friend and is forced to deliver the news to his best friend's family...and be faced with Ali...who he can not get out of his head.  His best friend always told him never to mess with his little sister...but it's kind of hard when she tempts him every time.
Ali has always had feelings for Nate, but he has always shut himself off from her.  A week or so after finding out her brother, she feels like she's being followed.  Then one day, she's mugged out in plain daylight.  She has two saviors who help her..but now she knows someone is out to get her so she finds Nate to help her.
Nate of course is not really up for it...but once everyone in his team sits down to find out who may be after Ali, they all know it has something to do with her brother, but why?

This is the first book in the series to Black Knights, Inc...and it definitely is a great start to the series.  Julie Ann Walker introduces you to other characters and she sets up the world of Black Knights...perfectly!  She even throws you on a roller coaster ride of emotions.  I loved how she got me to laugh and cry at the same time.  When I found out the truth on what happened to Ali's brother...let's just say the waterworks started falling.
And of course I adored Nate and Ali.  They had chemistry from beginning to end.  Nate was stubborn though, but I knew why he was stubborn when I found out the truth.
What can I say about Ali?  I clicked with her the minute Julie introduced her.  She is one chick who could hold her own.  She also knew how to put Nate on a stand still.  =)  Although...she did have a weak stomach.  Poor girl...she got herself into sticky situations...but she did manage after awhile to get through it all.
Oh...and the sexual tension and of course the sex scenes...were mind blowing!  Ali is one lucky woman.
I look forward to reading the second installment now because its about two other characters who were introduced in "Hell on Wheels".

I recommend this book to any reader out there who enjoys an amazing romantic suspense book, loves the first book to a new series that will keep you turning the page (or in my case, clicking the Kindle), and of  course anyone who loves sexy men who ride motorcycles.  (who doesn't love a man on a custom bike)  =)
This book is definitely a book where I will be re-reading it again because I already miss Nate and Ali.  =)
I look forward to the second installment in September.  Julie Ann Walker has a fan for life.  =)
