Welcome to Book Lovin' Mamas! Thank you for being here today!
Q) Could you tell us 3 things about yourself
that we can’t learn on the internet?
1.
I spent
two years living in a convent—okay well almost in a convent—while working as a
volunteer in Zambia (And I have to say, I’d make a terrible nun!)
2.
The first
ever story I remember writing was about a talking horse. I think I was nine
years old at the time.
3.
I’m only
five foot one. I usually keep very quiet about this as I like people to think
I’m bigger.
Q) What inspired you to become a writer?
Reading. I’ve always been an avid reader and thought it would be a
wonderful thing to be able to write my own stories. But the actual writing came
about because of a lack of reading material. Back in my twenties, I spent some
time working as a volunteer in Africa. We were based in a village on the edge
of Lake Kariba and we had no TV, no internet, and very little access to books.
I started writing then as a withdrawal symptom, and as a means of keeping
myself entertained.
Q) Do you have any rituals or traditions for
when you start a new book or series?
None. I hate routines, so tend to avoid them in my writing. However, I
am a total plotter. So I’ll always spend some time plotting before I start
writing. But again, I don’t have any one way that I plot, it varies with each
book.
Q) Where do you find your inspiration when
writing a book?
Everywhere.
Other books I read, TV programs (the inspiration for Break Out came mainly from
the TV series, Firefly, which I have watched numerous times). Often just when
I’m out riding or walking the dogs I’ll see something and it will trigger an
idea. I love the whole ‘what if’ thing and seem to do it automatically these
days – usually it’s what if something bad happens though.
Q) If you could be any character, which one
would you pick and why?
This probably changes at regular intervals, depending on what I’m
reading. But right now I’d like to be Mac out of Karen Marie Moning’s Fever
series (which I just read for the second time) because I am totally in love
with Jericho Barrons!
Now for a
few fun questions.
Q) Summer or Winter?
Definitely summer. I love being hot.
Q) Sweet or Salty?
Salty.
Q) Sunrise or Sunset
Sunrise.
When I was younger I was a night person. Now I’m an early morning person
especially in the summer.
Q) Beach or Mountains
It’s a
close one. I live in the mountains but I love to visit the beach.
Q) Country Music or Rock
and Roll?
Both
Thank you
so much for letting us get to know you a little bit better and for being here
today!
Nina
Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she
spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia, which left her with a love
of the sun and a dislike of 9-5 work. She then spent a number of years mixing
travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled
down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains
of southern Spain.
Nina
writes all types of romance often mixed with elements of the paranormal and
science fiction.

Review
I hadn't ever heard of this author before I read this book and I didn't know it was previously a novella and has since been extended into a full novel. After reading it I do wish I could read the shorter version, just because I want to see what all has been added because though the story was a great read, it seemed a little too long. I had a hard time staying interested until about halfway through the book. It just seemed like too much was being drawn out. Other than that though, I really liked this book. Plenty of action (at least in the second half), unique characters and fantastic world building!
It starts out with Rico escaping from his latest mission and Skylar setting her mission for The Collective up. Skylar needs Rico and his crew to get her to Trakis One and Rico and his crew want the money Skylar is offering so they're stuck with each other. Rico knows from the start that something is off with Skylar but he decides to drop it because he wants her so bad and Skylar decides she kind of likes being on the ship with Rico and his crew even if she is a little afraid of Rico and his fangs. Throughout the whole Journey through space the characters managed to get into all kinds of trouble and that ending was pretty good. I don't like being left hanging but I'll just have to get the next book ASAP now.
The characters especially made this book stand out for me. Rico and his crew were very entertaining. The banter between Rico and Tannis, his ship Captain, is hilarious! I was always excited to hear what they had to say to each other next. Skylar was a great leading female character. Strong, no nonsense, and stubborn, yet lonely and vulnerable underneath. She seemed the perfect match for the sexy arrogant vampire, Rico. Oh Rico! I LOVED him! Big, bad and oozing that alpha male arrogance. He is definitely what made me love this book so much. I think Rico rates top 10 in my all time favorite male characters. Seriously, right up there with Karen Moning's JZB, Nalini Singh's Hawk and and Lora Leigh's Natches.
Break Out has everything you want in a paranormal romance. Action, adventure, crazy characters, a fun new world and some smokin' hot sex! I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it. I'm really excited for the next book in this series and dying to know all about Al. :)
