Review: "Goddess Legacy" by M.W. Muse

Goddess Legacy
(Goddess Series #1)
Publishing Date: 1/13/31
Publisher: Penning Princess Publishing
Genre: YA Romance Fantasy (New Adult)

Description:
Legacy Kore is an average seventeen year old with your basic insane crush on the hottest guy in school... rather Adin Shepard was the hottest guy in school before he graduated a couple of weeks ago. Now it’s summer vacation and she’s not sure when she’ll get to see him again. Until he shows up at her surprise seventeenth birthday party. Cue saliva glands--it’s time to drool. But her giddiness is cut short when her guardian delivers an emotional blow, telling Legacy her mother hadn’t died when she was baby, but that she’d left for Legacy’s protection all those years ago. After the initial shock, she expects some story about how her mother was in the Witness Protection Program or something else just as crazy, but when she’s told that her mother is a Greek Goddess and that Legacy is changing into one too, she thinks her guardian needs a trip to a mental hospital. Legacy a goddess? Um, yeah. Right. And her BFF is the Easter Bunny. While trying to make sense out of something that was impossible to believe, Adin asks Legacy out on a date. She is thrilled that her fantasy might become a reality, but when she meets the new guy in town, River, she discovers everything isn’t always as it seems, and the legacy she wants just might not be the legacy she is destined to have.

My Review:
I love Greek mythology so when I read the synopsis of this book, I definitely knew I needed to check it out.

M.W. Muse tells a story of a girl named Legacy, who's life is changed the minute her guardian tells her the truth about her parents and what is going to happen to her when she turns 18.  She does not believe her at first until she starts having strange dreams.
Everything is about to fall in place though for Legacy.  The hot boy she grew up with, Adin, asked her out, and she's going to have a job for summer.  Although, another boy, River, comes into her life and he starts telling her stuff that is making her realize that her guardian may have told her the truth.
Legacy though is going to realize not everything as it seems and she has to figure out the truth to her dreams and also keep herself alive for her 18th birthday because someone is out to kill her before than and River, the new guy knows who.

M.W. Muse does an amazing job on her take on Greek mythology and I liked how the characters are different takes on each greek god/goddess, except for a few characters that do not play a role in it.
Legacy finds out the truth a little bit who she really is, but it takes awhile for her to find out.  She also does not find out the truth on River and Adin until towards the end.
I clicked very well with some of the characters, but others I did not.  Adin had his moments where I could not get along with him.  I did not like Ellen and Kate...but that is to be expected.  Callie was Legacy's best friend and she was always there to help Legacy on trying to figure out what was going on, even though she really is not apart of it.
It was slow at first to get into the storyline until it got interesting towards the end and towards the times Legacy was figuring out what was happening to her and who she was.  The ending was what made me go into shock.  Poor Legacy.  She was just getting some happiness in her life and a certain person had to come into the book.  Boo!!

I give this book 3.5 moons and I look forward to the second book.  I just hope I find out a little bit more about Legacy and what is happening to her, Adin, and River.
For some reason I have strong feelings for River more than I do Adin.  I am not sure why though.  Maybe it is because I feel terrible for him.
You will have to read this book to find out why and come up with your own assumptions and who you like best.
I recommend this book to young adult readers out there and readers who love mythology.  You also will notice it falls in the New Adult genre when you read it...because the book definitely makes you go through certain emotions through certain characters...like for me, River.  (poor guy)
Don't get me wrong I like Adin, but he made me mad when he kept secrets from Legacy.

Review:
This is not my usual genre in the last few months since I have been on a contemporary and suspense kick for awhile, but when I read the description of "His Black Wings" I thought it would be something I would enjoy.  I recommend to not really read the book's blurb though above because it will give the book away too much.  At least that's my opinion.
"His Black Wings" is about Claren Maidstone and how she has lost her parents to a boating accident and now is forced to flee and hide due to the man she was supposed to marry is out to get her because she harmed him and so did her dog.  Claren ends up answering ad from Frederick Lowood to become has assistant, but she really does not assist him.  Frederick has his own secret agenda of searching out Claren.  He actually has been keeping an eye on her for awhile and has had it out for her family since his father died.
Claren's family comes from a industry that ended up making Frederick's son the way he is.  If anyone was to find out about Frederick's son, they would either want to experiment on him or send him to the one place that Frederick has been trying to forget about.
Frederick ends up asking Claren to become his son's friend, but he's afraid that his son, Estrigan will be upset since he really hasn't been seen.  He only comes out at night when the staff at his home are gone and he can move around freely or actually fly around freely.  Estrigan is one of a kind...who has black wings.
When Estrigan finds out Claren is living with them, he is upset about it, afraid she will run away screaming...instead he becomes intrigued with the girl and will do anything to know her, especially when he sees her crying one evening.

"His Black Wings" was an enjoyable read, but it did not capture my interest until the story of what Frederick was up to and how Estrigan came to have the black wings.  I also liked finding out about the backstory of Frederick.  I really thought the book started out slow and I actually thought I would not finish it until Claren moved into Frederick's house and Estrigan was introduced.  He was ruthless to Claren at first and Calren just wanted to find out why.  The moment Estrigan saw Claren with other males who wanted to capture her interest, he started changing.
There was a lot going on with Frederick and what he was doing and then the guy, Kurten that Claren ended up hurting in the beginning and what his secret agenda was on trying to get Claren.  He was actually annoying and I definitely believed he got what was coming to him in the end.
Decker and Horace got my attention when they were fighting over Claren and they had a bigger role later on in the book.  They cared a lot about Claren and just wanted her safe even though they did not know her well.
All and all, this book got 3 stars.  It was much different from what I am used to.
It just did not capture my interest that I was hoping.  It took me awhile to get into.  I did enjoy certain characters over others.  I enjoyed a different take of what Astrid wrote.  It is not an Angel book.  It has a different storyline all together which made it fascinating.  It has a little steampunk to it, I believe which is one genre I definitely need to dive into more.
Claren was a strong character who definitely keep me interested in as well.  Estrigan will be my favorite though, even when he was mean to Claren.
I recommend the book to YA Fantasy readers out there.  You'll definitely enjoy this story that Astrid wrote.  Maybe if I was not into a contemporary or suspense kick I would have enjoyed this book more.  It definitely would be something I would have enjoyed as a kid or as a teen more.

I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from the author for the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

Blog Tour: "Salamander Stone" by C.J. Fenge (Interview/Promo/Excerpt/Giveaway)

Welcome to our Virtual Book Tour Stop of "The Salamander Stone" by C.J. Fenge brought to you by Reading Addiction Blog Tours.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I suppose the most relevant fact, as far as the book is concerned, is my childhood in Africa. I lived there at a time that was really magical. I was also lucky to have a father who was very adventurous and believed children should have adrenaline-filled experiences. We certainly did – and I don’t think my mother ever recovered!

2. What does a typical writing day look for you?

I’m quite lazy and also disorganised, so there’s not really a typical day. When writing I do a lot of thinking, and then I wait for what I call ‘tipping point’ which is when the story is ready to just pour out. I never quite know when this will be, but if I’ve got a deadline it never happens until the very last minute. I think the lesson is: if you want to be a writer, don’t take lessons from me!

3. What inspired you to write "Salamander Stone"?

I discovered the incredible ancient power of the Yorkshire Henges, and I knew there must be a magical tale to tell about them.
4. Tell us a little bit about "Salamander Stone" and why readers should check it out?

Imagine you’re an ordinary girl and at age 16 you suddenly discover the most powerful secret – and the scariest thing about this secret is that it centres on you. You are the one who is powerful. You are the one who can hurt or heal. You are also the one who is hunted and threatened. In my story, this ordinary girl, (who turns out to be extra-ordinary) makes some bad decisions and has to go through a lot of heartache. But her biggest battle is with herself. Who is Amber? And can she make the right choices in time to save herself as well as others. The story is designed as a fast-paced thriller, but it’s more than that. As one reviewer put it “Is it a paranormal story, a romance, an adventure? The answer is a resounding yes! This book has it all.” And that’s why you should read ‘The Salamander Stone’.

5. What was the hardest scene to write in "Salamander Stone"?

The hardest scene to write was towards the middle of the book when Amber’s guide is explaining to her what exactly is going on. I knew I had to make sure there were no loose ends – pretty difficult with such a complex story! But the most difficult scene emotionally was when Ophelia holds her dead daughter in her arms – and perhaps also the scene when I killed the little dog Tommy.

6. When you're not writing, what are your hobbies and interests?

I like reading – lots. Watching T.V., especially films. I also like riding my bike and riding horses (when I can afford it!)

7. What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Lazy; Disorganised; Greedy (for chocolate).

8. How do you come up with the names of your characters in your books?

I shouldn’t admit this, but for some of the characters I’ve not only used people I know, but their real names as well. Other characters are mixtures e.g. the evil Dr. Pitt is meant to be handsome and charismatic, so he became (in my mind at least) a mix of Brad Pitt and the evil from the story ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’.

9. If you could have dinner with one famous person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I’ve always been fascinated by Leonardo da Vinci, firstly because of his painting, but mostly because he was such an all round genius. But if I could have dinner with a fictional person, maybe Sherlock Holmes would be an interesting dinner guest.

10. Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

If you read the book, please get in touch and let me know what you think (through the website: thesalamanderstone.com.) I love to hear from readers.

Description:
She’s just the girl-next-door, that long-legged pretty thing with the flowing auburn hair. Nothing special, just ordinary Amber Brigantia, a sixteen-year–old with boyfriends on her mind; nothing more.
But you’re wrong. Beneath that enigmatic smile lie dark secrets hiding an elemental power, and when those secrets come out, everyone wants her. Everyone wants a piece of Amber.
They murder her father and lock her mother in an asylum. Then they come after her, led by the charismatic Dr. Pitt who wants that power for himself. And he doesn’t care how he gets it, smiling and smiling as he twists the knife. But Pitt has a rival, the sadistic Mrs Fedorowicz. She wants Amber too and she is an expert at making people dance to her tune - a tune that can really hurt.
Even those who love Amber cannot help her. Khiza, the African boy, is the lost other half of Amber’s soul, yet when she encounters the damaged and demonic Meshak she is torn in two and cannot decide what to feel any more. Then the demon Azmodeus suckers onto Meshak and time itself rocks in chaos, for the demon is after Amber as well - and what he wants is unspeakable. So let the power-games begin. And let that long-legged pretty thing be the prize.

Excerpt:
That weird cry came again, much closer now, cutting through the thick air—a high thin wail thrown far into the darkness and returning as a series of diminishing mocking echoes. Like a baby, thought Meshak, though no baby ever cried like that; no human ever cried like that.
Meshak stood up shakily on the sandy path, straining to see, trying to make sense of this alien world. Below him, on the trail he’d just crawled, another thing was crawling. He could sense it as a furry black shadow shifting and sliding, sucking its way towards him. It cried again as it slithered closer.
Meshak knelt in the sand on the pathway, and the thing, the black shadow, stopped crying and snuffled up close, filling the air with its rotting reek. It slithered behind him and he waited. After a moment he felt a soft suction as it burrowed under his clothes and battened greasily onto his back, inching its way up his body until it reached his left shoulder. Its voice hissed, insistent as it whispered interminably in his ear. It filled his mind, blocking out all other thought. Meshak stood up, his body giving little shivers of excitement like greeting an old friend. A long slow smile split his face in half; an evil gleam glinted in his eye. He moved down the path and back into his own world.
And the shadow on his shoulder went with him.
I’m an English Teacher, and all my working life I’ve been telling students: “Don’t put labels on yourself. They’re restricting.” I little realised that I was guilty of exactly that because I’d classed myself as analytical, not creative. And it was only when I was forced into some writing that I discovered I could create worlds, not just comment on other people’s creations.
So that’s what I do now and I have an increasing amount of time to do it in. My teaching career is winding down, my two children have grown up and left home, my husband of 40 years, also a writer, is busy creating worlds on his computer all day. To a casual observer ours is a very quiet, boring household. There aren’t even any pets making a racket since my two adorable, but elderly, ‘rescue’ cats died last year. But the inner life of our house is far from boring. Take a journey with Amber and her Salamander Stone and see what I mean. And remember not to put labels on yourself. If I can break free, anyone can.
