ARC Review - "The Hunter" by Monica McCarty (Giveaway)
The Hunter
(Highland Guard #7)
Author: Monica McCarty
Publisher: Ballantine
Release Date: 6/25/13
Genre: Historical Romance
Source: NetGalley
Description
The war for Scotland’s freedom continues as King Robert the
Bruce battles on. At his command is an elite army of trained warriors, soldiers
dedicated to their king, their country—and to the remarkable women they love.
Prized for his unbeatable tracking skills, Ewen “Hunter”
Lamont accepts a dangerous assignment: locate a missing undercover courier. But
this is no ordinary target. Ewen has met his prey before as “Sister Genna,” a
fiery, forbidden woman forever etched in his memory after one stolen, sinful
kiss. Now that he knows her real identity, he’s more determined than ever to
keep her safe. But without the protection of the veil between them, fighting
the allure of the beautiful lass may be the toughest battle this extraordinary
warrior has ever faced.
After her ill-fated attempt three years ago to rescue her
twin sister, Janet of Mar has found salvation acting as a royal messenger—until
she surrenders to a darkly handsome warrior whose rough, sensual kisses stir
feelings the woman in her can’t deny. But when betrayal leads to danger, and a
crucial communiqué is put in jeopardy, Janet has no choice but to put her faith
in the hunter who can find anything—perhaps even her heart.
Review
I’m new to this series and this author, so I wasn’t sure
what I would get when I agreed to read this book. I’ve heard good things from
many of my fellow readers though so I figured I would enjoy. And while I did
enjoy it, it didn’t totally impress me. The story was great, I absolutely love
the real history used, it made it very interesting but I felt there was a bit
too much story and not enough romance, for me at least.
Ewen and Janet were great characters. Both are very strong minded
and strong willed people, so they made quite the match together but I didn’t
really connect with them the way I usually do when reading. They just didn’t
capture my attention very well.
Coming into this series with this book probably wasn’t my
best decision but I enjoyed this one enough to be intrigued about the rest of
the series. There was just too much thrown at me in this book that I didn’t
enjoy it like I wanted to but I’d probably feel different if I’d read those
other books first, so I plan to do so. I gotta know what happened with those
other guys now!
So overall, this book was enjoyable but it’s not a favorite
for me. I would definitely recommend this book to highlander lovers but you
might want to read the other books first because I found myself getting lost or
being given too much information at once. There’s plenty of action and
suspense, a lot of great characters, some very interesting history and a bit of
romance though. Everything you’d want in a great historical novel! J
Ballantine has offered up 2 copies of the Hunter to 2 lucky winners! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment with your email address.

Thank you so much for
having me today on Book Lovin’ Mamas!
I’m thrilled to talk about CAPTURED HEART, my newly released16th
century, Scottish romance with paranormal elements! CH is Entangled
Publishing’s debut Scottish historical and is in their Entangled Select line.
The idea for CAPTURED
HEART started over thirteen years ago. In fact, this was my “first born” book. Although
when I wrote it the first time it had 40,000 extra words, different character
names, and every strange scene I’d ever imagined all stuck into one hefty tome.
After completing four other books, I came back to CAPTURED HEART, having developed
my voice and writing technique. I shaved off the extra words and rewrote it
into the romantic adventure it was always meant to be.
Meg is a healer fleeing
the man who killed her mother by accusing her of practicing witchcraft. The art
or “magic” of healing has always fascinated me as well as the sociology behind
fear of the occult in times past. So much of what we know today about medicine
would have been magic back in the 16th century. Meg possesses a
supernatural power to heal, but she doesn’t know how to use the glowing blue
light she can conjure. The power is more of a curse than a gift until she meets
her aunt who teaches her to wield and appreciate it.
There is also a fine
line, which I’ve learned first-hand this year as I fought cancer, between
healing someone to life and healing someone to death. A lot of our miracle
medicines are poisons. Doctors need to know how much and when to dose a patient
or the cure becomes lethal. Meg experiences this as she fights for the people she
loves. She is a bit like Florence Nightingale mixed with the goddess Diana and
a healthy dose of blue healing magic.
Caden Macbain, the hero
of CAPTUED HEART, is the perfect Highland clan chief. He’s been raised as a
rugged warrior but has an intellect that makes him question the reasons behind
war. I love this about him! He’s built a system of accountability for himself
by visiting ten cottages in his village every day to talk with his people. So
when he is enraged and wants to react foolishly out of revenge or some other
selfish emotion, he recalls the faces of the men, women and children who depend
on him to act with honor and in their interests, not his own. It chains him to
the right path in a time when many leaders acted recklessly to further their own
pursuits.
As a chief to a large
clan, Caden is definitely alpha-male, doesn’t talk much and doesn’t reveal his
plans except when he must. He is just as capable of surviving as a lone wolf as
he is leading a clan away from the brink of starvation. He can slice an
Englishman from stem to stern yet pluck a leaf from Meg’s wild curls. He could
have many women but decides that he wants only one. Ah, and there is the
conflict. What if the one he wants is the one whose sacrifice will save his
clan?
The villain of CAPTURED
HEART is Meg’s father, Rowland Boswell. Meg learned to fear the man when he had
her mother burned at the stake for witchcraft when Meg was only five years old.
When he comes to marry Meg off and she runs, he believes she must know his
secret, the secret he killed his first wife for in order to keep it. Just like
a cornered animal will strike out of fear, Rowland Boswell chases Meg into the
Highlands, determined to stop her from exposing his darkest desires and lust
for royal power.
CAPTURED HEART is the
first novel in a trilogy that blends magic and history in the time of Henry
VIII. TANGLED HEARTS is the second book and follows Caden’s best friend to the
English court where he must battle through the web of royal intrigue to help the
most complicated lass he’s ever met. He finds that a battle of wits at the
Tudor court can be just as deadly as a battle of steel on the moors.
HIGHLAND HEART, the
prequel to CAPTURED HEART, is a novella which introduces the Macbain/Munro
legend. It follows Rachel and Alec Munro on their mad adventure as Rachel’s
annoyance and Alec’s curiosity clash and turn into passion. HH will be released
in Entangled’s Flirt line later this year.
Thank you so much for
having me today! I hope these characters will capture your heart as much as
they have captured mine.

Review
Captured Heart is a heartfelt love story about a woman who is running for her life and a warrior laird doing everything he possibly can to save his clan., being pulled together to finally bring peace to the two enemy clans. This story has everything you want in a Highlander Romance. The big handsome highlander who loved his woman fiercely, the beautiful woman who seems to be helpless and vulnerable yet she's really a feisty little warrior in her own right and the enemy or in this books case the enemies that cause lots of unwanted problems and stop at nothing to get to their goal. While this isn't one of my favorite Highlander books, it's definitely on the keeper list.
The character in this book were lots of fun. I love highlanders and the whole history that comes with their stories and this one was no different. Caden and Meg were really wonderful leading characters. From the very beginning I was rooting for them because they really were a perfect match. I got a little frustrated that Caden let the lie go on as long as he did. I mean just tell her, get it over with. And Meg should have made him pay for it a bit longer than she did. The whole paranormal aspect with Megs powers added that little extra to make the story great.
The other characters were great too. The author seems to be setting this up as a series so I hope we get to see some of the characters again in future books. Like say...Ewan? ;) He was definitely a fun character.

OverallI would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance and highlanders specifically. It was well written and there never seemed to be a dull moment. Oh and Heather's highlander's are definitely dreamy! :) You ladies who love highlanders will love Caden and Ewan! I very much enjoyed reading this book and I really hope there will be more of them in the future!

ARC Review - "Never Seduce a Scot" by Maya Banks
Never Seduce a Scot
(The Montgomerys and Armstrongs #1)
Author: Maya Banks
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Release Date: 9/25/12
Genre: Historical Romance
Source: Edelweiss
Author’s Website: www.mayabanks.com
Description
As a way to bring two rival clans together the king has
ordered that Graeme Montgomery, laird to the Montgomery clan, marry Eveline
Armstrong, laird to the Armstrong clan’s only daughter. Everyone believes
Eveline to be daft or touched, not all there, because of a fall that occurred a
few years before but that’s not the case at all. She’s deaf, not daft, yet she
can still understand what people say by reading their lips, but she’s happy
with her life so she doesn’t correct anyone. Now that she’ll be marrying Graeme
though, she’ll have a totally new way of life to learn, and a whole clan of people
that hate her to deal with.
Graeme is not happy with his chosen wife. He wanted a family
and a wife who could be his lover and friend and give him children, but now
that won’t happen because he’s been ordered to marry a woman who’s not all
there. But once he gets to know her, he learns her secret and finds out that
his dream of a real family can come true and he may even learn to love his extraordinary
wife because she is just that special.
Now that they both have a chance at a happy fulfilling life,
they must convince their clans of that too and worry about an enemy who wants
it all ended. Can they bring their enemy families together and can Eveline win
the love of Graeme’s clan or are they forever doomed to live with this hatred
for the rest of their lives?
Review
This was a really beautiful story! Maya has outdone herself
with this book, it’s even better than her other three historicals combined. :)
With her brilliant writing style and incredibly lovable characters, it’s
impossible to not be sucked into this story and fall in love with the
characters.
Graeme is one of my very favorite heroes I’ve ever read
before. He’s kind and caring towards his clan and fiercely loyal to his people.
And with Eveline, *sigh* he’s such a wonderful man to her. He had every right
to be angry and hate her, but he welcomed her with open arms and tried to make
sure his clan did the same. And when they didn’t, which is so terrible, he
makes sure they know exactly what will happen to them if it happens to her again.
And Eveline, she is such a brave woman with more spirit than she knows what to
do with. Instead of feeling sorry for herself when she was stuck with a clan
she knows hates her and taken from her family, she held her head high and
worked as hard as ever to try and earn their love and loyalty and when they
just treat her like the lowest of the low she gets back up and keeps trying.
Both of these characters are more than just great characters, they’re
inspirational, they’re everything good in life and set a great example for how
every person should be towards everyone. Together they melt the pages too.
Whew, those love scenes were so sweet and sexy. Some of Maya’s best work is in
this book. Trust me, I know. ;)
I also enjoyed all of the secondary characters, specifically
Rory, Graeme’s sister and both his brothers and Eveline’s brothers. I can’t
wait to see what Maya does with them. I really hope they each get their own
books because they’re all drool worthy too. ;) As for Graeme’s clan members,
well I wish I could jump into the book and strangle them for some of the awful
things they did to poor Eveline, who didn’t deserve it but at least they made
up for it when it counted.
All in all, this was a fantastic read! Plenty of lovable
characters, a little action, a little drama and lots of sweet love scenes
(which make the book extra good in my opinion). I give this book 5 Moons and I
recommend it to all Maya Banks fans for sure and those who love Historical
Romance and even some Contemporary fans will love it too! :) Now I have to be
patient for the next book to release….

Never Seduce A Scot
(The Montygomerys and Armstrongs #1)
by: Maya Banks

No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Content with her life of seclusion, Eveline has taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world to view her as daft. But when an arranged marriage into a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, Eveline accepts her duty—unprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful that his new bride can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled that he stirs her deepest passions.
Graeme is intrigued by the mysterious Eveline, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation and whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love

Review - "The Dark Highlander" by Karen Marie Moning
The Dark Highlander
Author: Karen Marie Moning
Publisher: Dell
Release Date: 10/1/02
Genre: Historical Romance
Source: Audible (bought)
Description
Dageus MacKeltar is cursed with 13 evil spirits because he broke a very old pact that he not use the stones for his own personal gain. Now living in present day in high high rise apartment he searches for a way to break that curse in any way possible.
Chloe Zanders works in antiquities, she loves anything old so when she’s sent to deliver an old book to Dageus she can’t help but look around his home at all of the items in his own collection. She had no idea that in doing so she would be putting herself in a world she’d never dreamed of full of time travel and the fae. But she also didn’t expect to fall for the dark seductive man who isn’t quite as dark as he’d like to think.
My Review
This book was IN-CRED-IBLE!!!! I’m in love with Dageus, plain and simple! Because I listened to the audio book instead of reading the regular book I got the full effect. Phil Gigante has, by far, the most unbelievably sexy voice! Dageus is so darkly sensual and he has that dangerous air about him, it just makes me melt. Chloe wasn’t really my favorite character, kinda ditzy if you ask me but her and Dageus together made this book. He loved her so fiercely I could feel it while reading. I don’t think I’ll ever find another highlander book even close to this good.

Thrust into sixteenth-century Scotland Gwen fight to help Drustan save his clan and to remember her because she just might be falling in love with him.
My Review
After reading the Fever series I just had to read these books. I probably should have started with book 1 and read them in order but because I was so curious about Drustan, Dageus and Cian I went ahead and started with their books, this one being the first I read. First off I’ll say I made the best choice possible, this book was SO good and you don’t need to read the first 3 books in order to enjoy this one. They’re not really tied to close together. Drustan is a big, strong, honorable man and he’s such a sweetheart to Gwen. And I just LOVED Gwen! She was so funny!!! They just fit together perfectly. The time travel was fun too. You get a little bit of both worlds, present day and sixteenth century Scotland. From now on all highlander books I read will most likely be compared to this one, it’s just that good.

Review - "Beyond the Highland Mist" by Karen Marie Moning
Author: Karen Marie Moning
Publisher: Dell
Release Date: 11/4/09
Genre: Historical Romance/Time Travel
Source: Audible Audio Book (Gift)
Buy: Amazon and Barnes & Noble
Description
Hawk is a legendary man. A man who left a long string of very satisfied women begging for more. A man who always gets what or who he wants. Until the beautiful mouthy woman who is his new wife. He will do anything to have her, so be with her, to keep her.
Adrienne de Simone is a wounded woman but she’s not weak. Being thrust back in time has only thrown her off and it only makes her madder that her new pig headed husband doesn’t believe that she isn’t who he’s been led to believe she is.
But before either can have their way there is a very evil plot taking place under everyone’s noses and when Adrienne is made the pawn Hawk will stop at nothing to save her and keep her in his time.
My Review
I can’t even begin to describe this book well enough. This whole series is one of my favorites and I love every book so it’s not too bad when I say this isn’t my favorite in the series but it’s still a very good book. I read books 4-7 before going back and starting with the first three. I’m glad I did it now too because I don’t know that I would have loved these books as much if I hadn’t. It’s good enough but not near as good as her later books. Hawk is a very selfish man and pretty ruthless when trying to get what he wants but because he cares so much it kinda makes him look a little better. I loved Adrienne! She didn’t take his crap and for the most part she can handle just about anything thrown at her. So all in all this is a great read but if you want to love the series, start with book 4 Kiss of the Highlander. You’ll thank me later!

Review - "In Bed With A Highlander by Maya Banks
In Bed with a Highlander
(McCabe Trilogy #1)
Author: Maya Banks
Publisher: Ballantine
Books
Release Date:
8/30/2011
Genre: Historical
Romance
Source: Paperback (Bought)
Buy: Amazon and Barnes & Noble
Ewan McCabe, laird to the McCabe clan, is preparing to go to
war with his enemy when a beautiful secretive woman is dropped in his lap.
She's strong and brave but she's also not afraid to voice her opinions and it
drives Ewan mad. Ewan must decide if she's worth his time and effort to protect
her when what he really wants is to finally defeat his most hated enemy.
Mairin, the illegitimate daughter of a king, is taken
forcefully from the one place she's felt safe in her life by the worst kind of
men. Handed over to an evil man who only wants her for the riches she brings
with her, she's doomed to a terrible fate unless she can escape. Once she does and
finds herself in the hands of a proud warrior such as Ewan McCabe she finally
has hope that she can over come all of this evil. But faced with one more major
trial in their lives, will they find that hope in each other or will all be
lost forever?
I really like Highlander romance but I always tell people
that they need a certain feel to be believable so it's hard to find really good
ones. This book is one of those good highlander stories. There's love but
there's also heartache and war and a few difficult situations these characters
have to get themselves out of. I can't stand the books that are so uniform,
woman in distress, big man rescues her, they fight for love, they're back
together and everything is perfect. This book was not like that! Yes it had all
of those things, but it had more too. They struggled and fought for ther love
more than once, they overcame very powerful enemies, they had dificult
decisions to make and they made it through them more powerful as a whole and
strong as individuals. I recommend this book to all romance lovers. It's a
wonderful story and I can't wait for the next book in this series!
