Review: "Avoiding Mr. Right" by C.J. Ellisson

Avoiding Mr. Right
(A Walk on the Wild Side #2)
by: C.J. Ellisson
Publishing Date: 6/3/13
Publisher: Red Hot Publishing
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source: Personal Copy (Bought at Amazon)

Description:
Carla Johnson thinks issuing orders to a lover will keep her heart safe and leave her in charge of her own destiny. Afraid for Carla’s future, her best friend Heather implores her to change her self-centered ways, handing her a list of love life mistakes to steer clear of:

1. Casual Sex
2. Friends with Benefits
3. Avoidance of Intimacy

Carla ignores the list—unwilling to face she might have a commitment problem. Until she invites a co-worker to her place one night. She instantly regrets the hum-drum sexual encounter and discourages the accountant from pursuing her.

Andy Shea refuses to become another lover the feisty blonde dumps. It'll take a patient man with a strong hand to unlock Carla's sexual awareness and win her heart. He’s up for the challenge to convince her he’s the one—and eager to prove this number cruncher won’t make a boring bedmate

My Review:
Avoiding Mr. Right is the second book in the a Walk on the Wild Side series by C.J. Ellisson and it definitely was another scorcher.  It is already about 90 degrees here in Florida in the summer time and to read this book, let's just say, you may want to read it during the night time when it is cooler, otherwise you will feel like you are on fire.  I think my body temperature went up about ten degrees while reading this book and I needed a glass of cold water to cool down...(mostly thrown on me).

Let me get this off my chest first...I would have given Avoiding Mr. Right five stars but the only reason why I gave it 4.5 stars is that I did not click with Carla, like I did with Heather in the first book.  In fact, I thought Carla was a little difficult and I definitely know why she felt the need to avoid men, but she assumed every man out there was the same and the ending is the only reason why I started to like her, but not too much.  I clicked better with Heather for some reason.  Although, I do like the fact that Carla gave over control in this book and became submissive towards Andy.

Without giving too much away, the main things I loved about this book.  The first and main reason is that C.J. Ellisson has a very addicting writing style that draws the reader in from the first page.  It also helps when C.J. can put together a very well-written book with an amazing storyline between characters that make you want to know more about them.  Oh...and let me not forget about the hot sexual scenes between Carla and Andrew.  Oh my!  *Fanning myself right now to cool down*
-One of my favorite scenes between them are when Andy gives Carla two gifts that they can use...and one them Carla can use on herself.  *seriously is it getting hot in here again*  =)

Andrew is the character that surprised me.  He's the accountant that knows how to woo women and Carla did not give him a chance at first and maybe that is another reason why I could not click with her.  Do not every estimate the guy or gal that may look boring or less appealing...because they may have some cards up their sleeves, like Andrew did.  He definitely was very sworn-worthy in my eyes.  *sigh*

Andrew definitely knows how to tame Carla and it amazed me on how he finally got her to open up at the end.  Andrew does not have it easy anyways, and he is going through a lot, but he is a very strong character.

If you love the contemporary romance genre, you definitely need to read this book, but I highly recommend you read the first book in the series, Vanilla on Top.
I give this book 4.5 moons and recommend anyone who reads it to be prepared for a cold shower afterwards.

I definitely look forward to the next installment in the series and I definitely want more than four books.  =)  I need me some more of C.J. Ellisson's highly addictive books and my hubby even says he loves when I read her books too.  =)

C.J. Ellisson's "Death's Servant" Blog Tour (Interview/Review) + Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on C.J. Ellisson's "Death's Servant" Blog Tour.
1. Describe yourself in three words.

Dedicated, hardworking, and driven.

2. Tell us a little bit about Death's Servant and why readers should check it out?

I wrote this book for my existing readers, but it will appeal to new readers as well. It's a prequel book on one of their favorite characters and it explains the 'how' on his involvement with the ancient vampire who runs the V V Inn with her husband. The novella is a great set up for the series without giving anything away on the later stories.

3. What inspired you to write the Prequel to the VV Inn Series?

As an author, we're more aware of the complex, unwritten backgrounds that motivate and drive our characters than our readers are. I've always known why Jon served the married couple (even though it was apparent he would never be a part of their union), what made Rafe seek out Vivian, and what tragedies and triumphs shaped Dria/Vivian to be the ruthless killer she is today. Sharing those tales with my readers has always been in the back of my mind. To find out they wanted to read them felt like a dream come true. Now I just have to write them all!

4. What was the easiest/hardest scene to write in "Death's Servant? (without giving too much away)

The scene where Jon is at his absolute lowest, carrying the woman he cares about in his arms. His emotions were so raw and painful, I worried I wouldn't be able to capture it well.

5. If "Death's Servant" was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each characters part?

LOL! I've always had certain actors in my mind to play the characters, but as the actors age I'm sure so will readers' expectations of whom they picture, too. I see Jensen Ackles as Jon, Daniel Craig as Rafe, and Angie Everhard as Dria/Vivian.

6. How did you come up with the title of the book?

Dria/Vivian has often thought of herself as death. Eventually, everyone she loves dies and she somehow feels she's to blame. Jon is her vampire servant, so it just seemed fitting.

7. Do you ever suffer with writer's block and if you do, how do you deal with it?

I sometimes have difficulty writing, but I'm not so sure I'd call it a block. I have health concerns and family obligations that often keep me from writing. I've never had a desire to write and sat down only to find there were no words. Life can suck the creative juices right out of us, but being a full time writer means you have to suck it up and push through the hard times.

8. Fun Question: If a zombie apocalypse were to happen, what kind of weapon would be your primary choice to kill the zombies?

Hmm… if we go with the assumption that a double tap to the head is enough to keep them down for good, then I'd want a reliable rifle with a huge magazine and lots of boxes of ammo. ;-)

9. Fun Question: If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you must have to survive?

Since the question doesn't say stranded alone, I'd want my husband, an emergency kit with flares, knives, a gun, matches, and medical supplies inside, and a big tackle box filled with lots of gear to catch fish. The rest we'd figure out together ;-)

10. What is up next for C.J. Ellisson?

I've got the next book in my contemporary erotic romance series, A Walk on the Wild Side, coming out in June. Avoiding Mr. Right is Carla and Andy's story and I can hardly wait to share it with my readers! I hope they enjoy the couple's steamy adventures as much as Tony and Heather's from Vanilla on Top.
Death's Servant

Publisher: RedHot Publishing

Description
Jonathan Winchester has clashed with his alpha one too many times. After another argument he leaves the Manitoba pack, his only home since the werewolf attack that changed his life. He returns to his home state of Virginia to start a new life free of pack politics. Jon finds work and meets a young waitress, Raine, who appears to be a lone werewolf, too.

As their relationship progresses, Jon’s embroiled in more intrigue than he bargained for and a danger bigger than he can handle. He's running scared until his own alpha tendencies surface, making him unable to leave the pretty werewolf’s problems behind. The young man is desperate to save Raine—even if his efforts may lead him straight to death.

Journey along in this first prequel novel involving the favorite characters from the bestselling V V Inn series. Written at reader demand, this stand-alone story explains how the beloved Jonathan came to serve the deadly redheaded vampire, Dria.

My Review:
I literally read this book within a 2 hour period due to not being able to put it down.  The first page alone had me sucked into the story.  I usually cannot read books in such a short period due to having my husband and my little girls constantly interrupting me...but when it comes to C.J.'s stories, I end up locking myself away from the world.  =)

Death's Servant is the highly anticipated prequel about Jon and how he meets Dria and becomes her servant.  Jonathan definitely had his reasons of becoming Dria's servant and Dria definitely is one kick-butt vampire, who I adore!!!
Jon left the pack he has no known since he became a werewolf and now he is back close to where he grew up, but not too close since his parents do not know he is alive.  He meets a lone wolf, Raine, and becomes quickly attached to her.  Unfortunately, Raine has a secret and now she wants Jon to leave town before it is too late.  When Jon finds out what is happening, it is up to him to save Raine and her pack.  He meets Dria and asks her for help, but of course she does not make it easy for him.

This story definitely is fast-paced into the world of where Jon came from and how he met the beautiful vampire, Dria, and her husband, Rafe.  I loved how C.J. told Jon's background and what happened to him.  He definitely was screwed over a lot in the pack he was in.  Poor guy!  The girl he thought loved him...was definitely a b***h.  I loved how Jon dealt with the person who he caught his girlfriend with.

I am so happy that C.J. told Jon's story.  I also enjoyed the fact that she mentioned Williamsburg, VA in the story.  =)  I live about 30 minutes away from it and she also mentions D.C. and the way she described D.C. when Jon was there, it felt like I was actually visiting.  (Now I need to make one last visit before I leave VA for good this summer)
The scene where Jon meets Dria and her mate...well...let's just say...you definitely want to read that part.  C.J. knows how to write a very steamy scene.  =)

If you love C.J.'s VV Inn Series and want to know how Jon came to know Dria and Rafe, then you will definitely want to read this prequel.
I give this prequel 5 full moons and highly recommend it to urban fantasy readers out there.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author's assistant in exchange for an honest review.  This review is my own opinion and I was not compensated in any way for this review.

Blog Tour: Interview, Review & Giveaway - "Vanilla on Top" by C.J. Ellisson

Welcome to our virtual book tour stop of "Vanilla on Top" by C.J. Ellisson brought to you by Bewitching Book Tours.
1. Tell us 5 things readers may not know about you.

-I can't touch type. (yes, that's true, please stop laughing ;-)
-I have such difficulty with spelling that I very rarely send a hand-written a card to someone.
-I never finished college.
-I have no formal training in writing, my majors in college were Art, Business (really boring) and then Chemistry (fascinating, but 8-10 hours in a lab all day would be equally boring).
-Before I became a writer I was going for my contractor's license. My first love was flipping homes with my husband.

2. How did you come up with the idea of "Vanilla on Top"?

I have never read Fifty Shades of Grey, and never will, but I know a lot of readers who have. Listening to them describe the story disturbed me. The hero's behavior sounded very controlling, something I experienced first hand in a mentally and physically abusive relationship I left in my early twenties. It bothered me to think women would want to experiment with BDSM and read about it portrayed in fiction in what was essentially a mentally abusive relationship. I realize my opinion may be out of the norm regarding Fifty (so please don't send me hate mail), but I just can't bring myself to read about that kind of control no matter how many people tell me it's a love story.

I'm eternally grateful the series has brought so many readers to erotic fiction, even if it is not fiction I choose to read. But that got me thinking, what would I read regarding BDSM? Was I ready for the scary stuff with equipment and Dom/sub relationship details? Did I want to read about the power play and emotional angst and upheaval prevalent in such stories? I realized I wanted to read something lighter, something more real.

I created a story I could relate to -- one of two lovers exploring the boundaries of their sexuality and finding new things they never would have discovered with anyone else. True intimacy in a relationship usually comes with time. It is my belief that trying anything risqué or out of your comfort zone can only be done in a loving, monogamous relationship. And since I hadn't come across anything like VoT yet, it seemed like a great fit.

3. Tell our readers a little bit about Vanilla on Top and why they should check it out?

Vanilla on Top is a love story with heart and emotional depth. The characters take risks with each other and with trying something new. The love they discover along the way surprises both of them. I think the publisher's short description says it best:

Determined to leave her wallflower tendencies at the door, Heather Pierce attends a speed dating event pretending to be someone new. Someone dominant. Little does she know, the larger than life man whose world she rocks is incognito himself, and he isn’t about to let the mysterious vixen slip through his grasp.

4. How many books are planned for the Wildside Series?

Right now, I've got five planned. Three are contracted in Entangled's Brazen line with new couples in each one, and two will be the continuation of Heather and Tony's developing relationship.

5. What is up next for C.J. Ellisson?

Professionally, I've got my next V V Inn inspired book coming out in March (no release date yet). It's a short novel based on Jon, the werewolf readers love, and how he came to be Vivian's servant. Before that book comes out I'll be at a terrific new reader event in St. Augustine Florida called Olde City, New Blood this February.

Personally, I'm still getting treatment for my various auto-immune diseases and following doctors orders to try and rid my body of multiple bacterial strains. Some days it feels like a never ending journey, but I know I'll be back to normal health one day.

My Review:
I have been waiting patiently to read C.J.'s latest release, Vanilla on Top.  This is definitely a FAVE for 2013 and I cannot wait to read the next installment.
Discover your inner bad girl, and set her free....hello...is that not catchy?  I know after reading this book, I need to set my inner bad girl free more often.  =)
"Vanilla on Top" should not be compared to Fifty Shades or even Crossfire.  This book is in a league of its own.  I had a hard time putting it down and of course my husband kept giving me the weird eyes whenever he would see me reading this from my iPad.  He was always asking what I was smiling about...he has no idea.  =)
Be prepared to be blown away from the first chapter in the book with a very heated, steamy scene between Heather and Tony.
This book is about Heather Pierce taking control of her life. She is tired of being the good girl and decides to set the bad girl inside of herself finally out.  She is new to it, but when she finally gets the courage to set her free, she is about to have some of the wildest times with the one man who she met at a speed dating event, Tony, and he will have a hard time resisting her.
The only thing is Tony is about to change Heather's world once Heather finds out the truth on where he works and what he is up to.  He never knew Heather and that his job would end up almost ruining her career.

C.J. Ellisson does an amazing job with writing a book that actually has a female character taking over the dominant role in the bedroom, and without using the tools you would find in a sex shop, but instead every day things that make it romantic.
She even writes a male lead who is able to let the female take over in the bedroom, or whenever, or wherever.  Tony definitely needed Heather though since he was used to being in control.  She managed to tame the man from his own ways.
She reminds us how women could play the vanilla Dom in a relationship.
Heather had her insecurities at first, but in my own opinion she overcame those insecurities.  The best part of Heather is that she used fantasies that she was comfortable doing and she happened to be a romance reader. (And she even referenced she never read Fifty Shades...which she may be a fictional character, but I definitely am one of those readers who has not read it...I'm really trying to now...but it may be my first DNF ever)
C.J.'s writing style is unique compared to other contemporary romance or erotic writers out there, which makes me adore her even more.  She does not follow in others footsteps.  She takes a different route into the genre.
There is no comparison with Vanilla on Top to other erotic books.
If you are a fan of contemporary romance or erotic genres and want to read a book where the roles are switched, you definitely need to read "Vanilla on Top".
Warning....sex scenes are throughout this book.  Who knows maybe you as a woman, will find out you have a inner bad self yourself after reading this book.
I know I must unleash my inner bad girl more often.  (It does drive the hubby crazy)  =)

I received a complimentary copy of the book for the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.  This review is my own personal opinion and I was not paid for it.

Tony steps closer and sinks to the cobblestone terrace, reaching with two eager hands toward my hips. He buries his face in my crotch and breathes deeply. “You smell so good.” He rubs his cheek back and forth against my panties. “What do you want me to do?”

A shudder ripples through me as the breath of his whispered voice warms my skin through the thin lace. He wants me to tell him what to do. I can do this.

“Kiss me,” I rasp, my voice barely above a whisper.

His soft lips press against the thin garment as the heat from his flesh teases me higher. My every sense feels on high alert during this encounter. I’ve never done anything so daring in my entire life. The next kiss presses harder and little shocks of arousal dart through my core.

“That’s nice,” I say, resisting the primal urge to grind myself into his face. “But I need more.”

I glance down into Tony’s light brown eyes and see an intensity I’ve never seen on a man’s face. To know it’s directed toward me feels even more amazing. “Tell me what you want.” His hot hands skate up my thighs to rest near the aroused juncture between my legs.

I feel the wetness pooling in my panties, my body eager and ready to be with this man I just met. More than anything I want his fingers teasing me to a release. “Slip your thumbs under my underwear and stroke me.”

He pulls his hot lips away from the damp cotton panel of my panties and breathes deep. “Yes, ma’am.”

A prickling ignites my skin, sending the hairs on end when he calls me ma’am. I like it.

I like it a lot.
C.J. Ellisson writes erotica and urban fantasy. Her vampire series, The V V Inn, mixes a heavy dose of erotic elements with suspense, action, a little bit of mystery and some light humor. She lives in northern Virginia with her husband, two children, two dogs, and a fluffy black cat who makes her sneeze.
